The Jaipur foot was developed for barefoot amputees by Professor P. K. Sethi. He used local artisans and readily available materials. The prosthesis was cheap and could be made in one hour. It enabled amputees to work in rural conditions, muddy and wet fields and to climb trees. It has been widely used in India, South East Asia and Africa, where local variations to the design have now been made.
We report an unusual case of early structural failure of the Freestyle stentless bioprosthesis 22 months after initial implantation. A 71-year-old woman, who had undergone stentless valve implantation by the subcoronary method, presented with a new diastolic murmur and progressive congestive heart failure 20 months after the initial implantation. Reoperation was performed using a stented biopro...
New brands of joint prosthesis are released for general implantation with limited evidence of their long-term performance in patients. The CUSUM continuous monitoring method is a statistical testing procedure which could be used to provide prospective evaluation of brands as soon as implantation in patients begins and give early warning of poor performance. We describe the CUSUM and illustrate ...
PURPOSE This paper is the first, to our knowledge, to propose the use of a bovine pericardium graft in corporoplasty for penile prosthesis implantation. The advantages of bovine pericardium graft have been demonstrated by its use in cardiac surgery, including low cost, biocompatibility, impermeability, resistance to dilatation, flexibility, low likelihood of retraction, absence of antigenic rea...
Introduction We have been using the Elektra prosthesis for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the CMC joint of the thumb since 1997. After 760 implantations, we studied 689 cases to obtain sufficient follow-up in 596 women and 93 men. Of the 689 cases with sufficient follow up, only 661 cases were not deceased or had records that could be traced. The results in this series are good in terms of ...
This article presents a comparison of screw-retained and cement-retained implant prostheses based on the literature. The advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of the 2 different types of restorations are discussed, because it is important to understand the influence of the attachment mechanism on many clinical aspects of implant dentistry. Several factors essential to the long-term success...
The inability to consistently achieve a passive fit with screw-retained implant prostheses is well documented in the literature. Cement-retained implant frameworks have been advocated for implant-retained fixed partial dentures. However, cement retention has not been routinely advocated for fixed-detachable hybrid prostheses. This article describes a method for fabricating a cement-retained fix...
To be effective, a prescribed prosthetic device must match the functional requirements and capabilities of each patient. These capabilities are usually assessed by a clinician and reported by the Medicare K-level designation of mobility. However, it is not clear how the K-level designation objectively relates to the use of prostheses outside of a clinical environment. Here, we quantify particip...
An 18-year-old female with no past cardiovascular history was admitted to the emergency room due to dyspnoea, reduced exercise tolerance, and mild systolic murmur along the right sternal border. Bedside echocardiography documented a giant polypoid tumour filling the right ventricle (RV), protruding to the right atrium and occluding tricuspid valve in systole. No tricuspid regurgitation and valv...
