In important application fields today-genomics and proteomics are examples-selecting a small subset of useful features is crucial for success of Linear Classification Analysis. We study feature selection by thresholding of feature Z-scores and introduce a principle of threshold selection, based on the notion of higher criticism (HC). For i = 1, 2, ..., p, let pi(i) denote the two-sided P-value ...

BACKGROUND Alefacept treatment is highly effective in a select group patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis, and is an ideal candidate to develop systems to predict who will respond to therapy. A clinical trial of 22 patients with moderate to severe psoriasis treated with alefacept was conducted in 2002-2003, as a mechanism of action study. Patients were classified as responders or non-resp...

RATIONALE Asthma is a heterogeneous disease driven by diverse immunologic and inflammatory mechanisms. OBJECTIVES Using transcriptomic profiling of airway tissues, we sought to define the molecular phenotypes of severe asthma. METHODS The transcriptome derived from bronchial biopsies and epithelial brushings of 107 subjects with moderate to severe asthma were annotated by gene set variation...

The American Women's Health Initiative study published in July 2002 caused considerable concern among hormone replacement therapy (HRT) users and prescribers in many countries. This study is an exploratory research comparing the genome-wide expression profile in whole-blood samples according to HRT use. Within the Norwegian Women and Cancer study, 100 postmenopausal women (50 HRT users and 50 n...

We describe a platform for the comparative profiling of urine using reversed-phase liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and multivariate statistical data analysis. Urinary compounds were separated by gradient elution and subsequently detected by electrospray Ion-Trap MS. The lower limit of detection (5.7-21 nmol/L), within-day (2.9-19%) and between-day (4.8-19%) analytical variation ...

An 11 year old girl developed hypertensive encephalopathy and renal failure from reflux nephropathy. Resection of her shrunken left kidney did not control her hypertension. Two selective arterial embolisations of the scarred right lower pole produced only transient benefit, but a heminephrectomy gave good control. Embolisation may delay definitive treatment.

The title mol-ecule, C(13)H(8)N(4), is is essentially planar [r.m.s. deviation for all non-H atoms = 0.025 (3) Å]. In the crystal, mol-ecules are connected through one weak bifurcated N-H⋯(N,N) hydrogen bond and three π-π stacking inter-actions between pyridine and imidazole rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.631 (8) Å] and between pyridine and benzene rings [centroid-centroid distances = 3....

In the title compound, C(13)H(12)N(4)O(6), the mean plane through the nitro-benzene forms a dihedral angle of 37.38 (15)° with the plane through the imidazole ring. The crystal packing is stabilized by weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O and C-H⋯N inter-actions together with π-π stacking inter-actions between nitro-benzene rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.788 (3) Å] and between imidazole rings [cen...

Membrane potential and the rate constants for anion self-exchange in dog, cat, and human red blood cells have been shown to vary with cell volume. For dog and cat red cells, the outward rate constants for SO4 and Cl increase while the inward rate constant for SO4 decreases as cells swell or shrink. These changes coincide with the membrane potential becoming more negative as a result of changes ...

To evaluate the utility of transcript profiling for prediction of protein expression levels, we compared profiles across the NCI-60 cancer cell panel, which represents nine tissues of origin. For that analysis, we present here two new NCI-60 transcript profile data sets (A based on Affymetrix HG-U95 and HG-U133A chips; Affymetrix, Santa Clara, CA) and one new protein profile data set (based on ...
