Comparison of the lipid composition between members of the Mycoplasmatales reveals a striking diversity of lipid structures, not only between the six genera but among species within the same genus. This is in contrast to nearly all other bacterial groups in which members of the same genus possess essentially the same lipids. There are in fact more similarities between lipids of a given species ...

Crude extracts from eight Nigerian medicinal plants, used traditionally in the treatment of infectious and septic diseases in both humans and animals were screened in vitro for antibacterial activity, using the hole-plate diffusion method. Most of the extracts were active against gram-positive bacteria. Two of the plant, Angeiossus schimperi and Anacardium occidentale, had good antibacterial ac...

Streptococcus pneumoniae is among the most significant causes of bacterial disease in humans. Here we report the 2,038,615-bp genomic sequence of the gram-positive bacterium S. pneumoniae R6. Because the R6 strain is avirulent and, more importantly, because it is readily transformed with DNA from homologous species and many heterologous species, it is the principal platform for investigation of...

The use of water-soluble synthetic peptide combinatorial libraries permits the systematic examination of tens to hundreds of millions of peptides in existing microdilution assays. In the present study, we prepared and determined the antistaphylococcal activities of two new synthetic peptide combinatorial libraries (one N-acetylated, the other not) composed of tetrapeptides having one position d...

Rifampin was glycosylated by a pathogenic species of Nocardia, i.e., Nocardia brasiliensis. The structures of two glycosylated compounds (RIP-1 and RIP-2) isolated from the culture broth of the bacterium were determined to be 3-formyl-23-(O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl])rifamycin SV and 23-(O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl])rifampin, respectively. Both compounds lacked antimicrobial activity against other gr...

DW-224a showed the most potent in vitro activity among the quinolone compounds tested against clinical isolates of gram-positive bacteria. Against gram-negative bacteria, DW-224a was slightly less active than the other fluoroquinolones. The in vivo activities of DW-224a against gram-positive bacteria were more potent than those of other quinolones.

Mural paintings in Carmona (Spain), Herberstein (Austria) and Greene (Germany), showing visible deterioration by microorganisms, were sampled to investigate the biodiversity of the heterotrophic bacteria present. Four hundred twenty-eight bacterial strains were isolated from which 385 were characterized by fatty acid methyl ester analysis (FAME). The isolates were grouped into 41 clusters on th...

Extracts of Riccinus communis were made in mid-polar solvent acetone and non-polar solvent, petroleum ether by using fresh stem, leaves and tender fruits. Bioassay and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was done against various gram positive and gram negative bacteria by agar cup method. Significant activity was found in all acetone extracts against mainly gram positive bacteria and some gr...

Monodisperse nanoparticles with antimicrobial polymer shells were fabricated using a seeded copolymerization; they exhibited excellent antibacterial activities against gram-positive bacteria as well as gram-negative bacteria.

Derinamycin was isolated from the myecelium of Streptomyces venezuelae Tü 1102 and its molecular formula was tentatively assigned as C51H93NO23. The antibiotic inhibits the growth of fungi, gram-positive bacteria and certain gram-negative bacteria but is less acitve against yeasts. A study of derinamycin action on the macromolecular synthesis of intact Bacillus subtilis revealed that the anti...
