FIVE MUCOPOLYSACCHARIDE STAINS INHIBIT PLATELET AGGREGATION INDUCED BY SEVERAL AGGREGATING AGENTS: with two stains inhibition is competitive. Alcian blue, 0.05 mg/ml, added to platelet-rich plasma potentiates ADP-induced aggregation. Alcian blue, 0.5 mg/ml, itself produces platelet aggregation, probably causing the release reaction. Three of these stains produce aggregation of red cells. They a...

BACKGROUND Although ethanol is known to inhibit platelet aggregation, the effects of another variant of alcohol, methanol, have not been reported. The purpose of this study was to determine whether methanol and its metabolite, formic acid, affect Ca2+ entry into and subsequent aggregation of platelets in vitro. METHODS Ca2+ entry into and aggregation of human platelets were measured by spectr...

Platelet survival time and platelet adhesiveness and aggregation were examined in 16 patients with prosthetic mitral valves. Subsequently, nine patients were treated with sulfinpyrazone in doses of 400 mg and 800 mg/day, and the studies were repeated after a treatment period of 5 to 8 weeks. 51Chromium survival time was shortened in 15 of 16 patients, and the mean value for the entire group was...

Background and Purpose: Epoxygenase metabolites of arachidonic acid are produced by several tissues and have been shown to inhibit in vitro platelet aggregation. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine whether 14,15or 8,9-epoxyeicosatrienoic acid, epoxygenase derivatives of arachidonic acid, affect the speed of platelet aggregation in in vivo mouse cerebral arterioles. Methods...

The use of HIV protease inhibitors (PIs) as part of antiretroviral therapy in the treatment of HIV-1 infection may be associated with an increased risk of bleeding. This prospective, randomized, open-label trial in healthy volunteers compared the effects of tipranavir/ritonavir (TPV/r), darunavir/ ritonavir (DRV/r), and ritonavir (RTV) alone on platelet aggregation after a single dose and at st...

The effects of various statins on platelet aggregation in blood samples from normal and diabetic rabbits were measured. All of the statins used in our study inhibited platelet aggregation by about 20% at 1 microM. Our results show that diabetes increased the rate of platelet aggregation from 48 +/- 5% to 72 +/- 8%, however, statins inhibited the rate of platelet aggregation by about 60% (p < 0....

With the exception of the major platelet glycoproteins llb/Illa and lb. which function as receptors for fibrinogen and von Willebrand factor, little is presently known regarding the possible role of other platelet surface proteins in mediating platelet aggregation. We report the production of a murine monoclonal antibody (AG-i ) recognizing human platelet membrane surface protein of relatively ...

Fibrinogen binding to receptors on stimulated platelets is a prerequisite for platelet aggregation. To gain further insight into the role of fibrinogen in platelet aggregation and to identify the platelet fibrinogen receptor, we developed a monoclonal anti-platelet antibody that inhibited platelet aggregation. The purified antibody, designated A2A9, inhibited platelet aggregation stimulated by ...

Epidemiological studies suggest that tea consumption is associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular events, but the mechanisms of benefit remain undefined. Platelet aggregation is a precipitating event in cardiovascular disease, and tea contains antioxidant flavonoids that are known to decrease platelet aggregation in vitro. To test the effect of tea consumption on platelet aggregation, ...
