Previous studies have shown that both cell suspensions and filtrates of the Rous sarcoma grown in adult chickens were entirely inactive when injected into even newborn pigeons (2). On the other hand, it was also shown that the Rous virus can be adapted to ducks and other species as well, provided the recipient host be a young or a newborn individual (1, 2) and the donor host be endowed with a c...
Metabolic rate (MR) and various body temperatures were recorded in pigeons Columba livia during gradual lowering of the ambient temperature (Ta) and during cold exposure (−10 °C) for an entire circadian cycle. The aim was to study how changes in MR accorded with the observed body temperature displacements and our knowledge of regional cold sensitivity. When Ta was lowered from 28 to −10 °C, the...
The progressive decrease in the efficiency of synthetic drugs has prompted research into phytogenic feed additives with potentially immunomodulatory and anti-infective properties. Complex diseases with a mixed etiology, including viral, pose a growing problem in domestic pigeons. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of various doses of aloe vera and licorice extracts on the ...
ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ort) is a respiratory pathogen which has been isolated throughout the world from numerous bird species. the present study was designed to isolate and characterize the ort from domestic turkeys, quails and pigeons. for this purpose, 250 samples from each bird species (turkey, quail and pigeon) with or without respiratory signs were tested by taking of tracheal...
Twelve adult domestic pigeons from Sebele, Gaborone, Botswana, were examined for the presence of helminth parasites. The cestode genus Raillietina and two species of nematodes, Dispharynx spiralis and Ascaridia columbae were recovered. Most pigeons (75 %) were infected with Raillietina spp. often in concurrence with A. columbae.
A large number of Sarcocystis spp. infect birds as intermediate hosts, but pigeons are rarely affected. We identified a novel Sarcocystis sp. that causes lethal neurologic disease in domestic pigeons in Germany. Experimental infections indicated transmission by northern goshawks, and sequence analyses indicated transnational distribution. Worldwide spread is possible.
We report the first successful demonstration of a simultaneous, two-item same-different (S/D) discrimination by 6 pigeons, in which nonpictorial color and shape stimuli were used. This study was conducted because the majority of recently successful demonstrations of S/D discrimination in pigeons have employed displays with more than two items. Two pairs of stimulus items were simultaneously pre...
A large body of evidence has shown that pigeons rely on an olfactory-based navigational map when homing from unfamiliar locations. Previous studies on pigeons released with one nostril occluded highlighted an asymmetry in favour of the right nostril, particularly concerning the initial orientation performance of naïve birds. Nevertheless, all pigeons experiencing only unilateral olfactory input...
Aim: To know the prevalence of antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli among dead and/or diarrhoic pigeons in and around greater Guwahati. Materials and Methods: Samples were cultured from dead and/or diarrhoic pigeons and identification was done by standard methods. The sensitivity of the isolated E.coli strains to 15 antibiotics of human and veterinary use was also determined. Organs from those...
in each case varied during the succeeding days and the general attitude varied from extreme lassitude and drowsiness on the one hand to hyperesthesia and clonic spasms on the other. The height of the clinical reaction occurred on the 7th to 9th days, retrogressing to normalcy on the 14th day with the animals remaining normal on the 20th day. Using a very active sample of the same virus, White L...
