A new improved version of the J1...J4 interferometric method for optical phase measurements, named J1...J3 method, is described, which is of easier implementation and is more stable to phase drift than the original one. This new spectrum technique is used to characterize a flextensional piezoelectric actuator by measuring its nanometric displacement amplitudes.

This paper presents tracking control performances of a piezostack direct drive valve (PDDV) operating at various temperatures. As a first step, a spool valve and valve system are designed to be operated by the piezoactuator. In this study, the stacked piezoelectric actuator, which is lead–zirconate–titanate (PZT) ceramic is used for control of spool displacement. An aerogel is used for heat ins...

A novel design and selection scheme for surface-parallel actuators for ultrathin, lightweight mirrors is presented. The actuation system consists of electrodes printed on a continuous layer of piezoelectric material bonded to an optical-quality substrate. The electrodes provide almost full coverage of the piezoelectric layer, in order to maximize the amount of active material that is available ...

This study presents a precision stage driven by a piezoelectric actuator and equipped with a displacement magnification mechanism for the purpose of easy displacement measurement. The displacement magnification mechanism consists of flexible hinges and lever mechanisms. The developed stage is able to provide accurate measurement by virtue of the displacement magnification mechanism, but it is e...

The present work considers the active vibration control of beam like structures with laminated piezoelectric sensor and actuator layers bonded on top and bottom surfaces of the beam. A finite element model based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory has been developed. The contribution of the piezoelectric sensor and actuator layers on the mass and stiffness of the beam has been considered with modeli...

MODEL REFERENCE CONTROL FOR ULTRA-HIGH PRECISION POSITIONING SYSTEMS by Lan Yu Due to the increasing demands of high-density semiconductors, molecular biology, optoelectronics, and MEMS/NEMS in the past decades, control of ultra-high precision positioning using piezoelectricity has become an important area because of its high displacement resolution, wide bandwidth, low power consumption, and p...

We consider a controllability problem for a beam, clamped at one boundary and free at the other boundary, with an attached piezoelectric actuator. By Hilbert Uniqueness Method (HUM) and new results on diophantine approximations, we prove that the space of exactly initial controllable data depends on the location of the actuator. We also illustrate these results with numerical simulations. Mathe...

In this paper, we report the fabrication of platinum nanowires using single wall carbon nanotubes as templates and their application as an electro-chemical actuator. Two regimes of actuation were seen in this actuator. In the “low” charge injection regime, quantum mechanical effects introduced by electrochemical double layer charge manipulation were the dominant actuation mechanism. Strain of a...

nonlinear lumped-parameter model of a piezoelectric stack A, ctuator has been developed to describe actuator behavior for purposes of control system analysis and design, and, in particular, for microrobotic applications requiring accurate position andor force control. In formulating this model, the authors propose a generalized Maxwell resistive capacitor as a lumped-parameter causal representa...

The potential use of piezoelectric bimorph actuators in minimally invasive surgery suture-needle grasper/holder applications is explored computationally. Upon defining the design/functional requirements for such surgical tools, a finite element analysis of the underlying piezoelectric boundary value problem is combined with the genetic algorithm optimization routine to arrive at an optimal morp...
