This paper aims to illustrate the usability and benefits of recent developments in co-simulation of building systems by means of several case studies. Co-simulation enables the reuse of models developed in separate simulation tools as well as integration of generic solvers into the computational building performance simulation domain. This in turn facilitates rapid prototype modeling of new and...

This paper describes the origins and history of multiple resource theory in accounting for di€ erences in dual task interference. One particular application of the theory, the 4-dimensional multiple resources model, is described in detail, positing that there will be greater interference between two tasks to the extent that they share stages (perceptual/cognitive vs response) sensory modalities...

This paper describes a proposed modeling and design environment for teaching the concepts of performance modeling of hardware/software systems to senior computer engineering undergraduate students. This environment is being developed to support senior capstone design projects in computer engineering. Portions of this environment are currently being beta tested and educational material, includin...

We focus on the problem of selecting the few vehicles in a fleet that are expected to last the longest without failure. The prediction of each vehicle’s remaining life is based on the aggregation of estimates from ‘peer’ units, i.e. units with similar design, maintenance, and utilization characteristics. Peers are analogous to neighbors in Case-Based Reasoning, except that the states of the pee...

The balance metric is a simple approach to estimate the performance of bandwidth-limited loop kernels. However, applying the method to in-cache situations and modern multi-core architectures yields unsatisfactory results. This paper analyzes the influence of cache hierarchy design on performance predictions for bandwidth-limited loop kernels on current mainstream processors. We present a diagno...

A method for analyzing parallel systems with the help of structured Markovian models is presented. The overall model is built from interdependent submodels, and symmetries are exploited automatically by grouping similar submodels in classes. During model analysis, this leads to a state space reduction, based on the concept of exact lumpability.

We propose a novel approach for performance prediction of OWL reasoners. It selects suitable, small ontology subsets, and then extrapolates reasoner’s performance on them to the whole ontology. We investigate intercorrelation of ontology features using PCA. Finally, we discuss various error measures for performance prediction and compare our approach against an existing one using these measures.

This paper discusses a new platform for network simulation. It combines the advantages of a functional description technique (SDL) with the advantages of graphical design entry and visualization possibilities known from network simulators. Thus it is well suited for protocol simulation and performance simulation. From basic considerations on simulation environments to the specific new platform ...

Lack of effective performance-evaluation environments is a major barrier to the broader use of high performance computing. Conventional performance environments are based on profiling and event instrumentation. It becomes problematic as parallel systems scale to hundreds of nodes and beyond. A framework of developing an integrated performance modeling and prediction system, SCALability Analyzer...

As cloud computing has gained a lot of attention recently, performance modeling of cloud applications would be very important for various management issues, such as capacity planning and resource provisioning for the cloud providers. This paper conducts research on several performance modeling approaches of transactional cloud applications. Steady-state models are established for both single-ti...
