OBJECTIVE To study the epidemiology of antibiotic resistant strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from sexually transmitted disease clinics in The Gambia. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and sixty five strains of N gonorrhoeae were tested for their antibiotic susceptibility, auxotype, serotype, and plasmid content. RESULTS Of the total population 84 (51%) were non-penicillinase producing (nonP...

A comparative study of the new antibacterial agent, rosoxacin, a quinoline derivative, with spectinomycin was made in women with uncomplicated cervical, urethral, pharyngeal, and rectal gonorrhoea. Rosoxacin was given in three oral regimens: 200 mg in a single dose, 300 mg in a single dose, and 300 mg in two doses of 150 mg four hours apart. All culture results 72 hours after administration wer...

A sensitive and reliable potentiometric biosensor for determination of penicillin has been developed by exploiting the self-limiting growth of the non-conducting polymer, polytyramine. Optimum polytyramine-penicillinase (PTy-PNCnase) films for potentiometric detection of penicillin were accomplished with monomer solutions which contained 0.03 M tyramine, 37 U/mL penicillinase, 0.01 M KNO3, and ...

All of 41 naturally occurring coagulase-positive methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated in various laboratories were resistant to several antibiotics and were lipase-negative. Most strains produced hemolysins, and 38 strains produced enterotoxin B. Acriflavine treatment of four strains resulted in elimination of resistance to methicillin and mercury; in one strain, resi...

Penicillin-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae from 405 patients were studied by determination of penicillin minimal inhibitory concentrations an penicillinase production. Eighteen percent were identified as penicillin-producing N. gonorrhoeae and the mean minimal inhibitory concentration, for all except penicillin-producing strains, was 0.805 micrograms/ml.

Eighty-nine patients with uncomplicated gonorrhea, including 31 patients (34.8%) infected with penicillinase-producing strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, were treated with oral ofloxacin (single 400-mg dose) or intramuscular ceftriaxone (250-mg dose). All 47 patients who received ofloxacin and 41 of 42 patients who received ceftriaxone were cured.

The use of cefuroxime and thiamphenicol in uncomplicated gonococcal infection was studied in 562 women confined to a clinic to preclude reinfection before cultural confirmation of cure. Cefuroxime was as effective as spectinomycin in the treatment of infections due to penicillinase-producing strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (PPNG) and was significantly more effective than 4.8 units of aqueous p...

Semisynthetic penicillinase-resistant penicillins are recommended for therapy of Staphylococcus aureus endocarditis, but evaluation of the efficacy and safety of individual agents has received little attention. At The New York Hospital, 11 heroin addicts and 5 nonaddicts were treated with nafcillin. The 11 addicts did well clinically, but four of the five nonaddicts had severe complications, an...
