Recent trials evaluated the safety and efficacy of two protease inhibitors, boceprevir (Victrelis) and telaprevir (Incivek), added to standard care with pegylated interferon and ribavirin, in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. These drugs open the door for triple therapy and other new therapies involving combinations of other direct-acting antiviral agents to become the ne...

Viral replication, as well as an immunopathological component, is assumed to be involved in coxsackie B virus-induced myocarditis. We evaluated the efficacy of the interferon inducer Ampligen on coxsackie B3 virus-induced myocarditis in C3H/HeNHsd mice. The efficacy of Ampligen was compared with that of the interferon inducer poly(inosinic acid)-poly(cytidylic acid) [poly(IC)], alpha interferon...

Treating chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection using pegylated alpha interferon and ribavirin leads to sustained clearance of virus and clinical improvement in approximately 50% of patients. Response rates are lower among patients with genotype 1 than with genotypes 2 and 3 and among African-American (AA) patients compared to Caucasian (CA) patients. Using DNA microarrays, gene expression w...

Pegylated interferon plus weight-adjusted ribavirin is standard therapy for chronic hepatitis C, but there has not been consensus about the relative benefits of Pegasys (Roche/Genentech) and PegInton (Schering-Plough). Past research has produced conflicting findings, and data have not always been strictly comparable due to regimen differences such as varying doses of ribavirin, which helps prev...

We describe the case of a patient with chronic hepatitis C treated with standard and pegylated-interferon (PEG-IFN) alpha and ribavirin. He developed a reversible hearing loss during the first course of PEG-IFN + ribavirin, but achieved sustained viral clearance and biochemical normalization after PEG-IFN + ribavirin re-treatment.

Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is considered to be an immunosuppressive cytokine. However, the continuous administration of pegylated IL-10 (PEG-IL10) leads to the rejection of large, firmly established and metastatic syngeneic tumors. PEG-IL10 therapy induces the expansion and activation of intratumoral, tumor antigen-specific CD8(+) T cells, leading to interferon γ (IFNγ)-mediated Th1 like immunity a...

Randomized controlled trials of hepatitis C virus (HCV) therapy with pegylated interferon and ribavirin have demonstrated sustained viral response rates (SVRs) of 54%-63% (efficacy). Treatment results in clinical practice (effectiveness) may not be equivalent. The goal of this study was to assess the effectiveness of HCV treatment with pegylated interferon and ribavirin in a treatment-naïve, hu...

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) has emerged as a major viral pandemic over the past two decades, infecting 170 million individuals, which equates to approximately 3% of the world's population. The prevalence of HCV varies according to geographic region, being highest in developing countries such as Egypt. HCV has a high tendency to induce chronic progressive liver damage in the form of hepatic fibrosis...
