Aerobic biodegradation behavior of nonylphenol monopropoxyethoxylates was investigated in two tests with different inocula-sewage sludge and river water. Both primary biodegradation and formation of different biodegradation intermediates were studied. Primary biodegradation of nonylphenol monopropoxyethoxylates was relatively fast and complete with the sewage sludge as the inoculum. On the othe...

Exposure of pyrimidines of DNA to ionizing radiation under aerobic conditions or oxidizing agents results in attack on the 5,6 double bond of the pyrimidine ring or on the exocyclic 5-methyl group. The primary product of oxidation of the 5,6 double bond of thymine is thymine glycol, while oxidation of the 5-methyl group yields 5-hydroxymethyluracil. Oxidation of the 5,6 double bond of cytosine ...

Nijmegen Breakage Syndrome (NBS), an autosomal recessive genetic instability syndrome, is caused by hypomorphic mutation of the NBN gene, which codes for the protein nibrin. Nibrin is an integral member of the MRE11/RAD50/NBN (MRN) complex essential for processing DNA double-strand breaks. Cardinal features of NBS are immunodeficiency and an extremely high incidence of hematological malignancie...

The 20S proteasome has been shown to be largely responsible for the degradation of oxidatively modified proteins in the cytoplasm. Nuclear proteins are also subject to oxidation, and the nucleus of mammalian cells contains proteasome. In human beings, tumor cells frequently are subjected to oxidation as a consequence of antitumor chemotherapy, and K562 human myelogenous leukemia cells have a hi...

A series of phosphine-Pt(2+)-catalysts is reported, which enable the oxidative cascade cyclization of poly-alkene substrates. When the terminus is appropriately arranged and a catalyst reoxidation mediator is included, several polycyclic all carbon skeletons can be obtained. In one example, a chiral P2Pt(+2) catalyst provides up to 79% ee.

Human 8-oxoguanine-DNA glycosylase (OGG1) plays a major role in the base excision repair pathway by removing 8-oxoguanine base lesions generated by reactive oxygen species. Here we report a novel interaction between OGG1 and Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP-1), a DNA-damage sensor protein involved in DNA repair and many other cellular processes. We found that OGG1 binds directly to PARP-1 th...

Functionalized graphene oxide (FGO) reinforced quaternized poly(ether ether ketone) membranes were prepared for high temperature proton exchange membrane applications. The introduction of FGO significantly improved the mechanical strength and oxidative stability of these membranes at a high doping level. These reinforced membranes showed high tensile strength up to 40 MPa and high proton conduc...

Horseradish peroxidase-mediated oxidative cross-linking of a thiolated poly(ethylene glycol) is promoted in the absence of exogenous hydrogen peroxide, by adding a small amount of a phenolic compound under physiological conditions. The prepared hydrogel can encapsulate and release living mammalian cells.

This work describes moisture sorption behavior and other physicochemical properties of gelatin/poly (Ani) films. Theglyoxal (Glox) cross linked gelatin (Gel) films have been loaded with aniline, followed by their in-situ oxidative polymerization to yield Gel/poly (Ani) composite films. The moisture uptake behavior of the plain Gel and Gel/poly (Ani) films has been studied under various Relative...

Human mitochondria contain a genome (mtDNA) that encodes essential subunits of the oxidative phosphorylation system. Expression of mtDNA entails multi-step maturation of precursor RNA. In other systems, the RNA life cycle involves surveillance mechanisms, however, the details of RNA quality control have not been extensively characterised in human mitochondria. Using a mitochondrial ribosome pro...
