Plasma catecholamine levels increase dramatically at birth. To determine the contribution of adrenal catecholamine secretion to the surge in catecholamines at birth and the role in newborn adaptation, we performed surgical adrenalectomy or sham operation on near-term ovine fetuses. After recovery in utero, the animals were delivered and supported by mechanical ventilation. Plasma catecholamine ...

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) with feeding arteries of 3 mm or more have been shown to be associated with paradoxical embolization and serious neurologic complications. Therefore it is generally recommended to occlude feeding arteries of this size, while smaller feeding arteries often are left untreated. However, neurologic complications have also been described in patients with...

Early detection of pulmonary nodules is extremely important for the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. In this study, a new classification approach for pulmonary nodules from CT imagery is presented by using hybrid features. Four different methods are introduced for the proposed system. The overall detection performance is evaluated using various classifiers. The results are compared to si...

The increase of alveolar macrophages in jaagsiekte sheep lungs is not caused by excessive surfactant production but is due to a chemotactic factor secreted by the tumor cells. This factor has a molecular mass in the region of 13 kilodaltons, is stable at 56 degrees C but labile at 100 degrees C and, being sensitive to proteases, indicates that it is a small protein molecule.

Burkholderia cepacia has emerged as an important pulmonary pathogen in immunocompromised patients and in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Little is known about the virulence factors and pathogenesis of B. cepacia, although the persistent and sometimes invasive infections caused by B. cepacia suggest that the organism possesses mechanisms for both cellular invasion and evasion of the host imm...

Jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) uses hyaluronidase 2 (Hyal2) as a cell entry receptor. By making inactivating mutations to the catalytic residues of human Hyal2, we found that hyaluronidase activity was dispensable for its receptor function. The affinities of the JSRV envelope glycoprotein for Hyal2 and the Hyal2 mutant were similar, and hyaluronan did not block either high-affinity interact...

The diagnosis of ruminant theileriosis in Turkey is based on microscopical examination of thin blood and lymph smears, serology, traditional staining methods of the salivary glands of ticks and molecular techniques. Although some investigators reported that T. mutans was found in cattle with microscopic examination (7.4%-36.7%) and experimental study, they did not detect this parasite using mol...
