A case is presented which is thought to be the first described example of heterotopic ossification occurring within the path of a bullet. Although the information was not available from prior medical records, the bullet presumably passed though bone or periosteum, thereby seeding the permanent cavity and facilitating ossification within the surrounding muscle and soft tissue.

We report a case of ossification of the posterior atlantoaxial membrane associated with an os odontoideum in a 46-year-old woman. She developed myelopathy following a minor motor vehicle accident. The patient underwent posterior atlantoaxial arthrodesis and resection of the ossified lesion and recovered uneventfully. Long-standing atlantoaxial instability might have played a role in ectopic oss...

The management of heterotopic ossification is controversial. This is a rare case affecting both hips and knees of a 22-year-old woman that prevented her from walking. The management and the outcome, three years after excision of the ossific masses, as well as the measures to prevent recurrence after excision of the heterotopic ossification, are discussed.

Liposarcoma is one of the most common soft-tissue sarcomas. Calcification and ossification can occur in liposarcoma; however, the presence of both ossification and calcification is a very rare entity. We present a case of a partially calcified and ossified dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the thigh in a 76-year-old woman, which contained heterologous elements of chondrosarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma.

It was shown that intersterno-costoclavicular ossification often appears together with pustulosis palmoplantaris by Sonozaki et al., 1980. We report here a patient of Graves' disease associated with intersterno-costoclavicular ossification and pustulosis palmoplantaris, and discuss the relationship with these conditions.

Estimations of serum alkaline phosphatase were carried out prospectively on a series of patients having a total hip replacement. The levels of serum alkaline phosphatase before operation indicated a group of patients who subsequently developed heterotopic ossification. Levels of this enzyme after operation did not indicate those patients who were developing heterotopic ossification.

Heterotopic ossification can be defined as the formation of bone in tissues which normally exhibit no properties of ossification. It is characterised by the rapid development of calcified bone in soft tissues. Ectopic bone can develop from immature osteoid in...

BACKGROUND The demand of a burr hole surgery for chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is increasing in the global aging society. Burr hole-derived autologous bone dusts are not associated with extra costs compared with other commonly used synthetic materials. In addition, postoperative calvarium ossification requires periosteum-mediated blood supply, which is lacking after using avascular synthetic...
