Mathematical models were developed to test the likelihood that large cytosolic adenylate concentration gradients exist across the bacteria-infected cells of legume nodules. Previous studies hypothesized that this may be the case to account for the unusually low adenylate energy charge (AEC; 0.65) measured in the plant fraction of metabolically active nodules (M.M. Kuzma, H. Winter, P. Storer, I...
Dinitrogenase reductase-activating glycohydrolase (DRAG), involved in the regulation of nitrogenase activity in Rhodospirillum rubrum, is associated with chromatophore membranes in cell extracts. We show that DRAG can be specifically released by treatment with MgGDP; other nucleotides studied had no effect. The DRAG activity released corresponds to the release of DRAG protein.
Nodulation ability was tested for Frankia strains HFPCcI3 and EL1, and Frankia sources A.t. and G.a. from Allocasaurina torulosa and Gymnostoma australianum, respectively, on A. torulosa Miq., Casuarina cunninghamiana Miq., G. australianum L. Johnson and Elaeagnus triflora Roxb. It was shown that A. torulosa and C. cunninghamiana formed nodules only with the Frankia sources obtained from their ...
Genes involved in nodulation competitiveness (tfx) were inserted by marker exchange into the genome of the effective strain Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii TA1. Isogenic strains of TA1 were constructed which differed only in their ability to produce trifolitoxin, an antirhizobial peptide. Trifolitoxin production by the ineffective strain R. leguminosarum bv. trifolii T24 limited nodulation...
Rhodobacter capsulatus possesses two genes potentially coding for ammonia transporters, amtB and amtY. In order to better understand their role in the physiology of this bacterium and their possible significance in nitrogen fixation, we created single-knockout mutants. Strains mutated in either amtB or amtY did not show a growth defect under any condition tested and were still capable of taking...
Nitrogen Fixation, Symbiotic Cyanobacteria, Photosynthesis, Respiration, Heterotrophic Growth Fructose supported the heterotrophic growth of the cyanobiont Anabaena azollae, isolated from the water fern Azolla filiculoides, and also enhanced its growth in the light by 2-3fo ld . Fructose was taken up at a high rate in the light and in the dark, in an energy-dependent reaction. The photosyntheti...
The nodulation characteristics of soybean (Glycine max) mutant nts382 are described. The mutant nodulated significantly more than the parent cultivar Bragg in the presence and absence of several combined nitrogen sources (KNO(3), urea, NH(4)Cl, and NH(4)NO(3)). The number of nodules on the tap root and on lateral roots was increased in the mutant line. In the presence of KNO(3) and urea, nitrog...
Rhizobium strains nodulating green gram [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] were found to produce bacteriocin on modified Bergersen's medium and inhibited the growth of homologous Rhizobium strains. Four bacteriocin producing and four bacteriocin non-producing strains were compared for their effect on nodulation, in planta nitrogenase activity and plant dry weight of green gram. The bacteriocin produc...
