We have identified genes required for competence of Neisseria meningitidis, a naturally transformable human pathogen. Although not comprehensive, our analysis identified competence-defective mutants with transposon insertions in genes not previously implicated in this process in Neisseria.

objective: the lack of adequate recognition of health importance of non-hiv reproductive health infections (rhis) in nigeria has led into this study, which was to determine clinical pathogens in non-hiv rhi in nigeria using a tertiary health facility as case study. materials and methods: a nine-year investigation was carried out between 1997 and 2005 on 4047 (n = 1626 males; n = 2421 females) p...

Long pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is a non-redundant component of the humoral arm of innate immunity. The present study was designed to investigate the interaction of PTX3 with Neisseria meningitidis. PTX3 bound acapsular meningococcus, Neisseria-derived outer membrane vesicles (OMV) and 3 selected meningococcal antigens (GNA0667, GNA1030 and GNA2091). PTX3-recognized microbial moieties are conserved str...

DNA mimicry is a direct and effective strategy by which the mimic competes with DNA for the DNA binding sites on other proteins. Until now, only about a dozen proteins have been shown to function via this strategy, including the DNA mimic protein DMP19 from Neisseria meningitides. We have shown previously that DMP19 dimer prevents the operator DNA from binding to the transcription factor NHTF. ...

Advances in next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies since 2005 have revolutionized biological science. One particular application of NGS is to elucidate microbiomes built environments. We are currently conducting a series studies on the elucidation and control mass infection mechanisms based dynamic measurement environment microbiomes. The objective this study clarify dispersion character...

female sex worker; thus, the bacteria could have derived from her pharynx. N. gonorrhoeae strain H041 was previously isolated from the pharynx of a female sex worker (1). To prevent the emergence and spread of ceftriaxone-resistant N. gonorrhoeae, pharyngeal gonorrhea must be treated. It is uncertain whether a 1-g dose of ceftriaxone would be effective against pharyngeal gonorrhea caused by str...

Members of the genus Neisseria include pathogens causing important human diseases such as meningitis, septicaemia, gonorrhoea and pelvic inflammatory disease syndrome. Neisseriae are found on the exposed epithelia of the upper respiratory tract and the urogenital tract. Colonisation of these exposed epithelia is dependent on a repertoire of diverse bacterial molecules, extending not only from t...

Two Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates from Seattle and two isolates from Uruguay were resistant to erythromycin (MIC, 4 to 16 microg/ml) and had reduced susceptibility to azithromycin (MIC, 1 to 4 microg/ml) due to the presence of the self-mobile rRNA methylase gene(s) ermF or ermB and ermF. The two Seattle isolates and one isolate from Uruguay were multiresistant, carrying either the 25.2-MDa tet...
