The relation between single particle and ensemble measurements is addressed for semiconductor CdSe nanocrystals. We record their fluorescence at the single molecule level and analyze their emission intermittency, which is governed by unusual random processes known as Lévy statistics. We report the observation of statistical aging and ergodicity breaking, both related to the occurrence of Lévy s...

Multiprobe measurements were performed on tiny single crystals of DMe-DCNQI complexes prepared directly on SiO2/Si substrates. The differences in conduction properties between the micro- and nanocrystals and bulk crystals were observed.

A minimized protein consisting of a linear ZnS-binding peptide fused to an antibody-binding domain supports the one-step aqueous synthesis of Mn-doped ZnS nanocrystals that exhibit smaller size, brighter fluorescence and improved antibody-binding relative to those made with the original designer protein.

Nanosized Li(y)MnSiO(x) and LiMnPO(4) have been synthesized by a hydrothermal route. Simply by changing parameters such as metal precursors and/or template, high surface area Li(y)MnSiO(x) with different morphology and sizes were prepared, in particular hollow spheres and plate-like nanoparticles, however with poorly developed crystallinity. In the case of LiMnPO(4), highly crystalline nanocrys...

Conventional three-dimensional (3D) structure determination methods require either multiple measurements at different sample orientations or a collection of serial sections through a sample. Here we report the experimental demonstration of single-shot 3D structure determination of an object; in this case, individual gold nanocrystals at ~5.5 nm resolution using ~10 fs X-ray free-electron laser ...

Soft, high moment materials are crucial for the magnetic data recording industry in applications such as write poles and soft underlayers. Ever increasing areal densities have pushed the requirements for materials exhibiting saturation magnetizations above 2 T. In this work we investigate nanocrystalline FeCoB which exhibits a saturation magnetization of ;2.2 T. FeCoB exhibits a magnetostrictio...

Controlled growth of nanocrystals (NCs) is produced by self-seeded nucleation with preferential thermodynamic stability. The intermediate reactants undergo in situ phase transformation forming the final products. The growth followed by irreversible phase transformation leads to the complete separation of nucleation and growth, thereby allowing size tuning of the final NCs.

This communication describes a facile and mild chemical etching method for resizing of CdTe nanocrystals, which provides a possible approach for tailoring the size-dependent properties of the nanocrystals.
