OBJECTIVES Therapy of AIDS patients infected with Mycobacterium avium is problematic due to its intrinsic resistance to antibiotics. We have characterized the efflux pump activity of M. avium wild-type strain through an automated fluorometric method and correlated it with intrinsic resistance to antibiotics. METHODS M. avium ATCC 25291(T) and Mycobacterium smegmatis mc(2)155 were evaluated fo...

Mycobacterium avium is widely distributed in the environment, and it is chiefly found in water and soil. M. avium, as well as Mycobacterium smegmatis, has been recognized to produce a biofilm or biofilm-like structure. We screened an M. avium green fluorescent protein (GFP) promoter library in M. smegmatis for genes involved in biofilm formation on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plates. Clones associ...

In the recent publication “Comparative Analyses of Nonpathogenic, Opportunistic, and Totally Pathogenic Mycobacteria Reveal Genomic and Biochemical Variabilities and Highlight the Survival Attributes of Mycobacterium tuberculosis,” Rahman et al. (1) used bioinformatic methods to examine the evolutionary relatedness and metabolic capacity of mycobacteria of diverse pathogenic potential. A key co...

The effectiveness of high-temperature, short holding time (HTST) pasteurization and homogenization with respect to inactivation of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis was evaluated quantitatively. This allowed a detailed determination of inactivation kinetics. High concentrations of feces from cows with clinical symptoms of Johne's disease were used to contaminate raw milk in order to r...

Paratuberculosis progresses more quickly in young red deer than in sheep or cattle. This study describes the clinical, immunological and pathological changes over a 50-week period in fourteen 4-month-old red deer that received heavy oral challenge with Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP). At 4 and 12 weeks post challenge they were anaesthetized and a section of jejunal lymph node ...

The present study is a report on the presence of Mycobacterium avium in four birds of the psittaciform order kept as pets. Anatomopathological diagnosis showed lesions suggestive of the agent and presence of alcohol-acid resistant bacilli (AARB) shown by the Ziehl-Neelsen staining. The identification of Mycobacterium avium was performed by means of PRA (PCR Restriction Analysis). DNA was direct...

Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) species cannot be discriminated by the usual methods of biochemical identification of mycobacteria. This study showed that amplification by PCR of DT1 and DT6, two single copy sequences identified in the genome of M. avium serotype 2, the insertion sequence IS1245, found to be consistently present in M. avium strains and the heat-shock protein gene hsp65, follo...

We report a case of recurrent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (DMAC) disease with anti-gamma interferon autoantibodies. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case caused by reinfection with a separate isolate of M. avium. DMAC disease activity was monitored using serum IgG antibody titers against lipid antigens extracted from a MAC strain.

Background Therapeutic management of Mycobacterium avium infection is inadequate due to patient non-compliance, lengthy treatment regimen, multidrug associated toxic side-effects etc. particularly in AIDS patients who are at a greater risk of developing mycobacterial infection. This study was designed to evaluate chemotherapeutic potential of poly D, L-lactide-co-glycolide nanoparticles against...
