abstract hop stunt viroid (hsvd) and citrus tristeza virus (ctv) are the causal agents of most important diseases of citrus. previously we reported a novel variant of hsvd that constantly associated with the yellow corky vein disease. here, 19 individual citrus leaves with yellow corky vein symptoms were sampled for ctv by elisa. in this study, most symptomatic samples were found to be infected...

This study was conducted to determine the prevalence and effect of parasitic infection on erythrocyte indices in trade camels slaughtered in Maiduguri, Nigeria. Two hundred adult one humped camels comprised of 87 (43.5 %) males and 113 (56.5 %) females were examined for helminths and hemoparasites at their slaughter time according to the standard procedures. An overall prevalence of 79 % for s...

A soil temperature of 20 C was equally suitable for the invasion and development of M. hapla and M. javanica. However, M. javanica predominated in a mixed species infection at this temperature. Predominance increased with increasing mixed-species inoculum levels. Invasion by M. hapla was more density-dependent than M. javanica. M. hapla produced a greater incidence of terminal galls and lateral...

Infections with >1 Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain(s) are underrecognized. We show, in vitro and in vivo, how first-line treatment conferred a competitive growth advantage to amplify a multidrug-resistant M. tuberculosis strain in a patient with mixed infection. Diagnostic techniques that identify mixed tubercle bacilli populations are needed to curb the spread of multidrug resistance.

From April 2009 to December 2011, 44 dead hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) were collected incidentally from areas of Urmia, Iran. The overall prevalence of helminth infections was 95.0%. Specific parasites and their prevalences were: Physaloptera clausa (93.0%), Crenosoma striatum (61.0%), Capillaria aerophila (9.0%), Capillarias spp. (4.0%), Brachylaemus erinacei (2.0%) and Hymenolepis erinacei...

This non-concurrent cohort study aims to identify predictors of tuberculosis mortality in a large population database in Brazil. Tuberculosis, death, and TB/HIV cases were validated respectively from the tuberculosis surveillance (SINAN/TB), mortality (SIM), and SINAN/AIDS databases for a five-year period. Analysis included proportional hazard models with relative risk estimates. Out of 5,451 i...

Objective. Staphylococcus aureus is an important pathogen that causes intestinal infection. We examined the immunomodulatory function of single and mixed Lactobacillus plantarum strains, as well as their impacts on the structure of the microbiome in mice infected with Staphylococcus aureus. The experiment was divided into three groups: protection, treatment, and control. Serum IFN-γ and IL-4 le...

Bivariate linear mixed models are useful when analyzing longitudinal data of two associated markers. In this paper, we present a bivariate linear mixed model including random effects or first-order auto-regressive process and independent measurement error for both markers. Codes and tricks to fit these models using SAS Proc MIXED are provided. Limitations of this program are discussed and an ex...

We report the draft sequence of Streptococcus pyogenes 06BA18369 (emm type 41.2, sequence type 579 [ST579]), isolated from a skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) mixed with Staphylococcus aureus. This genome provides insight into the genetic composition of S. pyogenes strains associated with mixed SSTIs.

Urines from patients with symptoms of urinary tract infection yielded mixed growths of different colony types of Escherichia coli. The different colony types were found to be variants of single infecting strains caused by mutation or by phase action. It is suggested that care should be exercised in the interpretation of apparently mixed growths from urine.
