Abstract. Suitable macroscopic quantities are identified and used to assess the field distribution within a composite specimen of finite size with random microstructure. Composites made of N anisotropic dielectric materials are considered. The characteristic length scale of the microstructure relative to the length scale of the specimen is denoted by ε and realizations of the random composite m...

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by social communication deficits and restricted and repetitive interests. It mostly affects males, and has a range of severities and presentations. The causes of ASD are, as yet, unknown, though research indicates that a combination of genetic and environmental factors contribute to aberrant brain structure and funct...

Market Surveillance plays important mechanism roles in constructing market models. From data analysis perspective, we view it valuable for smart trading in designing legal and profitable trading strategies and smart regulation in maintaining market integrity, transparency and fairness. The existing trading pattern analysis only focuses on interday data which discloses explicit and high-level ma...

Human episodic memory is supported by networks of white matter tracts that connect frontal, temporal, and parietal regions. Degradation of white matter microstructure is increasingly recognized as a general mechanism of cognitive deterioration with aging. However, atrophy of gray matter regions also occurs and, to date, the potential role of specific white matter connections has been largely ig...

The neocortex of the human brain is the seat of higher brain function. Modern imaging techniques, chief among them magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), allow non-invasive imaging of this important structure. Knowledge of the microstructure of the neocortex has classically come from post-mortem histological studies of human tissue, and extrapolations from invasive animal studies. From these studies...

In this paper, the existence of a solution in the form of a minimizer or microstructure is established for the boundary value problems of nonlinear elasticity with certain nonconvex stored energy functions such as those of St. Venant-Kirchhoff type materials. Necessary and sufficient conditions for minimizing sequences of the potential energy to converge to a minimizer or to microstructure are ...

We analyze the stability of laminated microstructure for martensitic crystals that undergo cubic to trigonal, orthorhombic to triclinic, and trigonal to monoclinic transformations. We show that the microstructure is unique and stable for all laminates except when the lattice parameters satisfy certain identities.

In a gelatin-dextran mixture, changing the (relative and/or absolute) concentration of the components leads to the formation of different microstructures. Confocal laser scanning microscopy illustrated that the nature of the microstructure determines the location and morphology of Escherichia coli colonies. Observations indicate that bacterial growth preferentially occurs in the dextran phase, ...

This paper is focused on microstructure of protective layers created by co-deposition of Al and Si on nickel base superalloys INCO 713 LC and INCO 738 LC after thermal and thermal-stress exposition and on microstructure of basic materials (substrates). The contribution also shows creep tests results for both superalloys with and without a protective layer.

A newly developed microstructure‐sensitive extreme value probabilistic framework for fatigue variability based on computational polycrystal plasticity is exercised to compare the driving forces for fatigue crack formation (nucleation and early growth) at room temperature for four different microstructure variants of duplex a Ti‐6Al‐4V alloy. The aforementioned probabilistic framew...
