PURPOSE To analyze immunohistochemically morules in endometrioid lesions to show that CD10 is a sensitive marker for morular metaplasia. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN Immunohistochemical analysis of 53 instances of morular metaplasia comprising 1 cyclic endometrium and 52 endometrioid lesions associated with focal glandular complexity corresponding to 9 polyps, 4 atypical polypoid adenomyomas, 24 compl...

ABSTRACT Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common cancers in the world. Despite some improvement in the treatment of this type of cancer, the 5-year survival rate has been already remained low. Therefore further exploration of biological features and causes of gastric cancer is needed to reduce its occurrence. In sequential changes from superficial gastritis to dysplasia and cance...

Idiopathic myelofibrosis is often associated with myeloid metaplasia (extramedullary haemopoiesis) in the spleen and liver. However, the gall bladder is an extremely unusual site for it to occur. A 59 year old man with myelofibrosis, who underwent cholecystectomy for chronic cholecystitis, showed myeloid metaplasia in his gall bladder. Pathologically, this may lead to diagnostic difficulties.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign salivary gland tumour. It can occur in any salivary gland, but is most frequently found in the parotid gland. Chondroid metaplasia is a frequent finding in pleomorphic adenoma. Other forms of metaplasia have been described, but are encountered less frequently. We report a rare case of unusual pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland with schwannoma-...

BACKGROUND Gastric cancer is a serious public health problem in Northern Brazil and in the world due to its high incidence and mortality. Despite the severity of the disease, more research is needed to better understand the molecular events involved in this intestinal-type gastric carcinogenesis process. Since precancerous lesions precede intestinal-type gastric cancer, here, we evaluated the h...

AIMS To investigate differences in expression of keratin 20, a cytoskeletal protein in gastrointestinal epithelial cells, in completely differentiated intestinal metaplasia (type I) and incomplete metaplasia (types II and III). METHODS Gastric biopsy specimens from 66 patients with intestinal metaplasia were analysed immunohistochemically. Expression of keratin 20 was quantified as the percen...

BACKGROUND Interleukin (IL)-13 induces goblet cell metaplasia and plays an important role in mucus hypersecretion in asthma. We previously reported that IL-13 induced goblet cell differentiation along with less ciliated cell differentiation in guinea pig tracheal epithelial cells in vitro. In this study, we asked whether elimination of IL-13 could reverse the established goblet cell metaplasia ...

BACKGROUND Lung cancer risk remains elevated for many years after quitting smoking. To assess using proliferation indices in bronchial tissues as an intermediate endpoint biomarker in lung cancer chemoprevention trials, we determined the relationship between the extent, intensity, and cessation of tobacco smoking and proliferative changes in bronchial epithelial biopsy specimens. METHODS Bron...

Approximately 23,000 new gastric cancer cases and 12,000 associated deaths occur annually in the United States. Intestinal metaplasia and gastric epithelial dysplasia are precursor lesions to gastric adenocarcinoma, but are not readily detectable clinically, radiographically, or endoscopically. A noninvasive method of precursor detection would require the ability to distinguish precursor lesion...

BACKGROUND & AIMS Loss of gastric parietal cells is a critical precursor to gastric metaplasia and neoplasia. However, the origin of metaplasia remains obscure. Acute parietal cell loss in gastrin-deficient mice treated with DMP-777 leads to the rapid emergence of spasmolytic polypeptide/trefoil factor family 2 (TFF2)-expressing metaplasia (SPEM) from the bases of fundic glands. We now sought t...
