The anti scorpion venom activity of the Indian medicinal plant (Hemidesmus indicus, Pluchea indica and Aristolochia indica) root extracts (aqueous and methanol) was established in experimental animal models. Adult black scorpions (Heterometrous bengalensis) of both sexes were collected and the Scorpion Venom (SV) was collected by electrical stimulation, pooled, lyophilized and stored at 4 °C. S...

The venom of the South African scorpion Parabuthus transvaalicus was characterized using a combination of mass spectrometry and RP-HPLC separation and bioassays. The crude venom was initially separated into 10 fractions. A novel, moderately toxic but very high abundance peptide (birtoxin) of 58 amino-acid residues was isolated, identified and characterized. Each purification step was followed b...

The novel insecticidal toxin, LaIT2, was isolated from venom of the scorpion Liocheles australasiae. The amino acid sequence of LaIT2 was determined by an Edman degradation analysis and subsequent cDNA cloning. LaIT2 is composed of 59 amino acids with three disulfide bridges, and shares sequence similarity to the scorpion beta-KTx peptides.

The constituents of scorpion venom have not yet been fully identified. During preliminary investigation of the venom of Leiurus qidnquestriatus by paper chromatography, a spot corresponding in position to that due to 5-hydroxytryptamine (HT) was seen. This paper is concerned with the methods of identification and assay of this substance in venom, and also considers the histochemistry of the ven...
