Five instruments were tested for reliability in measuring tree heights under realistic conditions. Four linear models were used to determine if tree height can be measured unbiasedly over all tree sizes and if any of the instruments were more efficient in estimating tree height. The laser height finder was the only instrument o produce unbiased estimates of the true height for all four linear m...

Professional paper Photogrammetry is a technique of measuring 3D coordinates using photography as the main medium of metrology. This paper describes the use of the photogrammetric system in the automotive industry for control and measuring tasks. This contactless method is suitable for industrial application, because the measuring instruments are robust and mobile, so precise measurements are p...

A new concept of distributed IEEE-488 measuring systems using Java architecture is proposed. A connection of external modules (standard library for National Instruments IEEE-488.2 interface board) to source code in Java is described. Next, an example of the system, that uses a communication based on sockets for remote controlling of instruments, also via Internet, is presented.

Information on the performance of different instruments used to measure blood lactate concentration is incomplete. We therefore examined instruments from Yellow Springs Instruments (YSI 23L and YSI 1500) and three cheaper and simpler instruments: Dr. Lange's LP8+, Lactate Pro from Arkray in the KDK corporation and Accusport from Boehringer Mannheim. First, a number of blood samples were analyse...

This cross-sectional descriptive study of the Model of Domain Learning, which describes learners’ progress from acclimation through competence to proficiency through the interplay of knowledge, interest and strategic processing/critical thinking (CT), examined its extension to maternity nursing. Based on the identified need for valid, reliable quantitative instruments measuring cognitive and af...

In this paper, a novel method to determine the shape of a 3D object is proposed. Instead of a flexible conventional touch probe, a high-stiffness vibration touch sensor was developed. The proposed sensor consisted of a piezo-electric device and thin probe, and generated feedback voltage according to the relative distance from the object. The structure of this sensor is simple, so that it can wi...

BACKGROUND Healthcare researchers often use multiple healthcare survey instruments to examine a particular patient symptom. The use of multiple instruments can pose some interesting research questions, such as whether the outcomes produced by the different instruments are in agreement. We tackle this problem using information theory, focusing on mutual information to compare outcomes from multi...

Cloud Computing has been a trending topic for years now and it seems it has finally become mature enough for widespread commercial application. In this paper, the authors describe their approach to establish a secure cloud architecture which conforms to the Measuring Instruments Directive of the European Union while keeping the flexibility and benefits that cloud computing promises for companie...

The error on a real quantity Y due to the graduation of the measuring instrument may be approximately represented, when the graduation is regular and fines down, by a Dirichlet form on R whose square field operator does not depend on the probability law of Y as soon as this law possesses a continuous density. This feature is related to the “arbitrary functions principle” (Poincaré, Hopf). We gi...

This article provides an overview of the conceptual foundations of measuring health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children and adolescents in child and adolescent psychiatry, and of the current state of research in this field. The available procedures for determining quality of life are presented according to their areas of use and their psychometric characteristics. The internationally av...
