Digital ulcers and gangrene are common skin manifestations of connective tissue diseases, especially systemic sclerosis, although they are relatively rare in systemic lupus erythematosus. We describe here three patients with digital gangrene and systemic lupus erythematosus. None of the patients showed high disease activity of systemic lupus erythematosus at the time the digital gangrene develo...

A sixteen year old girl with systemic lupus erythematosus developed acute transverse myelopathy. She was treated with high dose steroids, cyclophosphamide, and plasma exchange and regained partial neurological function. Previous descriptions of transverse myelopathy complicating systemic lupus erythematosus are reviewed, with particular reference to the efficacy of high dose steroid treatment.

The chronic inflammatory environment associated with systemic lupus erythematosus can lead to an accelerated immunosenescence responsible for the endothelial damage and increased cardiovascular risk observed in these patients. The present study analyzed two populations with opposite effects on vascular endothelium, angiogenic T cells and the senescent CD4(+)CD28(null) subset, in 84 systemic lup...

A kidney biopsy was performed in 7 hypocomplementemic discoid lupus erythematosus patients despite the absence of overt renal involvement. Five patients had glomerular immune deposits and 2 patients with disseminated discoid lupus erythematosus exhibited definite proliferative glomerulonephritis. Those findings show that silent lupus nephritis may be encountered in discoid as well as in systemi...

Mycosis is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and frequent exposition to an infectious source could enhance the development of dermatophytic infections. A case of disseminated dermatophytosis by Microsporum gypseum is reported in a systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patient.

Culture-negative endocarditis has long been associated with systemic lupus erythematosus, but is usually asymptomatic or involves a single valve. We present a patient with destructive culture-negative endocarditis that remains without a microbial etiology despite an exhaustive workup using advanced diagnostic techniques in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW A combination of systemic autoimmunity and tissue response to immune injury underlie renal involvement in lupus erythematosus. In this review, we discuss recent literature investigating pathogenetic mechanisms of lupus glomerulonephritis. RECENT FINDINGS In lupus glomerulonephritis, glomerular immune complexes were believed to be the primary mediators of renal disease. Recen...
