anatomical structure. Just how far it is or is not vascular in normal man is not completely clear. In certain animals it is a-vascular and in man this is probably so. The abundant vasa vasorum supply the adventitia rather than the intima. In the cornea, lipoid deposition is the last event in a series of changes following chemical damage of various kinds. Let the chemical be called X. The chemic...
Weber and Freudenthal (1936-7), Weber (1943, 1944, 1947, 1948), and Fletcher (1946, 1947) have noted the rare occurrence of subcutaneous nodules in rheumatoid arthritis which consisted almost entirely of lipoid, and have designated such cases by various names to differentiate them from the " common " type of rheumatoid arthritis subcutaneous nodule. During the clinical examination of seventy ca...
BACKGROUND Regularly updating the German pharmacopoeia on contemporary preparations DAC/NRF, chapter "Nasal Applications" and the recommendations on "Nasal Oils" as well as "Nasal Ointments and Emulsions", the issue of the risk of lipoid pneumonia associated with the use of plant oils and when compared to mineral oils arose. MATERIAL AND METHODS We searched different databases: the "Grosse De...
Idiopathic pulmonary alveolar proteinosis is presumed to be an autoimmune disorder that may lead to pulmonary insufficiency. However, steroids do not appear to be effective and the standard of therapy is whole-lung lavage. We report the first case of successful therapy with rituximab, which addresses the pathogenic mechanism of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis.
We report the case of a nonimmunocompromised female patient, who developed exogenous lipoid pneumonia with Mycobacterium fortuitum infection at diagnosis, later followed by Aspergillus fumigatus infection. The association of exogenous lipoid pneumonia with atypical mycobacterial infection is uncommon but well-recognized, but, to our knowledge, association with A. fumigatus infection has not pre...
A lipoid of low molecular weight, isolated from the supernatant fluid of cultures of Pseudomonas pseudomallei, killed mice, but not rabbits, in doses comparable to those of the homologous lipopolysaccharide and also lysed sheep erythrocytes. In rabbits this lipoid failed to elicit primary dermal lesions, to prepare the skin for the local Schwartzman reaction, or to induce antibody
We report a case of lipoid pneumonia with pulmonary bilateral cavitated lesions. The diagnosis was based on the finding of abundant lipid-laden alveolar macrophages in bronchoalveolar lavage and the presence of histologic changes indicative of lipoid pneumonia in transbronchial lung biopsy.
Cytochrome P450scc, the mitochondrial cholesterol side chain cleavage enzyme, is the only enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of cholesterol to pregnenolone and, thus, is required for the biosynthesis of all steroid hormones. Congenital lipoid adrenal hyperplasia is a severe disorder of steroidogenesis in which cholesterol accumulates within steroidogenic cells and the synthesis of all adrenal...
