The radiation fields of a line source enclosed in a circular dielectric radome with grating consisting of an array of thin lossy metal strips are analyzed. The variations of the directivity of the source beam with respect to the beam direction are studied. The possibility of damping these variations by an appropriate design of the radome is demonstrated.

Like many artifacts of music notation and theory, musical scales are easy to represent in software for simple cases, but rapidly become very difficult for more complex cases (e.g., melodic minor scale, Indian ragas, or microtonal scales). The BoundIntervalNetwork and Scale objects of the open-source music21 toolkit provide new and powerful tools for abstracting and manipulating scales as used i...

The paper presents new approaches for analyzing the characteristics of intonation and pitch modulation of woodwind and brass solos in jazz recordings. To this end, we use score-informed analysis techniques for source separation and fundamental frequency tracking. After splitting the audio into a solo and a backing track, a reference tuning frequency is estimated from the backing track. Next, we...

We describe a generic tool for visualising differences between two groups of speakers who produce a given word sequence. We do this by first time-aligning all recordings and then aggregating time-varying information within each group. By that, we can display prototypical loudness and tempo contours, and also spectrograms, together with information on variability and group effect size over time....

A general Gauss divergence theorem with applications to convolution integrals of the form ∫ f(x̄)h(|x̄− ā|)dVn, where the integration extends over an n-dimensional polyhedral domain, is presented. The kernel h(|x̄ − ā|) may be singular, but the given integral must remain integrable. As a result of the Gauss theorem, the given integral is reduced to an integral over the boundary of the n-dimensiona...

Imagine a smooth surface patch, bounded by a closed contour which is observed stereoscopically. The interior of the patch presents an interpretation problem because of its lack of matchable features. Shading inside the patch is a potentially rich source of information. Its exploitation is facilitated by the stereoscopically matched contour, which supplies boundary conditions on surface shape. I...

The spectrum and variability of the Seyfert galaxy MCG–6-30-15 can be decomposed into two apparently disconnected components: a highly variable power law and an almost constant component which contains a broad and strong iron line. We explore a possible explanation of the puzzling lack of variability of the iron line, by assuming that the variations of the power law component are due to changes...
