BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy of a pelvic kidney for renal cell carcinoma is a procedure with little precedent, but one that offers the advantages of the minimally invasive approach. We present our experience with this unique procedure. METHODS A 64-year-old male with a history of end-stage renal disease was diagnosed with a 2.6-cm enhancing mass in a pelvic left ...

BACKGROUND Despite their potential benefits to patients with kidney cancer, the adoption of partial nephrectomy and laparoscopy has been gradual and asymmetric. To clarify whether this trend reflects differences in kidney cancer patients or differences in surgeon practice styles, the authors compared the magnitude of surgeon-attributable variance in the use of partial nephrectomy and laparoscop...

BACKGROUND Postoperative recovery after live donor nephrectomy is largely determined by the consequences of postoperative pain and analgesia consumptions. The use of deep neuromuscular blockade has been shown to reduce postoperative pain scores after laparoscopic surgery. In this study, we will investigate whether deep neuromuscular blockade also improves the early quality of recovery after liv...

OBJECTIVE To assess results obtained with the authors' technique of right hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy in living kidney donors. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 16 kidney donors who underwent hand-assisted right laparoscopic nephrectomy from February 2001 to July 2004. Among these patients, 7 were male and 9 were female, with mean age ranging between 22 and 58 years...

The aim of the stucdy was to present technical aspects and possible intraoperative complications based on the first single port surgery (SPS) laparoscopic nephrectomy performed in our center. The SPS laparoscopic nephrectomy of the right kidney was performed using a transperitoneal access in a 4-year-old child due to a small nonfunctional kidney complicated by hypertension. The intraoperative c...

We successfully performed 6 LESS radical nephrectomy via the retroperitoneal approach (RLESS) using the Alexis wound retractor as a single access with conventional laparoscopic instruments. The results demonstrated that our RLESS technique of radical nephrectomy is a safe and feasible procedure for management of localized renal cancer.

PURPOSE Minimally invasive management of small renal tumors has become more common. We compared the results of partial nephrectomy by video-assisted minilaparotomy surgery (VAMS), open, and laparoscopic techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively compared clinicopathological, oncological, and functional outcomes in 271 patients who underwent partial nephrectomy for renal tumors at on...

The indications for nephron-sparing surgery and for minimally invasive surgery are continually expanding. Nephron-sparing surgery, also known as partial nephrectomy, presents a challenge to the minimally invasive surgeon. Herein, we describe our technique of robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. This approach may have potential advantages of including easier excision and suturing. Mo...

OBJECTIVE To present seven cases of single incision laparoscopic nephrectomy and nephroureterectomy in children as a recent videoscopic innovation. PATIENTS AND METHODS Seven children with nonfunctioning kidneys, three with multicystic dysplastic kidneys, two with end-stage renal nephropathy due to vesicoureteral reflux, and two with giant hydronephrosis were qualified to nephrectomy or nephr...

BACKGROUND Live donor kidney transplantation is the treatment of choice for end-stage renal disease. Open donor nephrectomy (ODN) was the standard until the introduction of the laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN) in 1995. Hand-assisted laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (HALDN) was added shortly thereafter. The laparoscopic techniques are associated with increased operating room times and equipmen...
