We discuss an analysis of constraint satisfaction problems, such as sphere packing, K-SAT, and graph coloring, in terms of an effective energy landscape. Several intriguing geometrical properties of the solution space become in this light familiar in terms of the well-studied ones of rugged (glassy) energy landscapes. A benchmark algorithm naturally suggested by this construction finds solution...

A correlation analysis will be applied to subspaces of the t-ness landscape generated by the synchronization task for one-dimensional cellular automata. This results in a stochastic model that can be used to characterize the correlation structure of those subspaces. The results show that both subspaces can be characterized by an AR(2) model, both for point mutation and crossover.

Many cellular functions are carried out by proteins that are bound together in multiprotein complexes. The binding between two highly flexible proteins to form homodimers is studied here using energy landscape theory and simulations based on a perfectly funneled energy landscape. With the aim to survey the range of binding mechanisms, two sets of homodimers were selected based on the experiment...

The aim of this research was to compare the rangelands structure and landscape degradation in Iril sub-watersheds, Ardabil province. Land use map and the Landscape Fragmentation Tool were used to determine 4 classes of patch, edge, perforated and core through 5, 10, 15 and 20m cell sizes. The landscape metrics of LPI, ED, cohesion, mesh, split, and AI were calculated using Fragstats software. R...

This paper explores the spatial dimension of the landscape, with the aim of building an indicator of landscape state for the European Union that accounts for the difference in heterogeneity among rural landscapes across Member States. The investigation mainly utilised land cover data from the CORINE Land Cover 2000 inventory. This was later compared with ground truth photographic data for speci...

Accurately quantifying the variation of urban green space is the prerequisite for fully understanding its ecosystem services. However, knowledge about the spatiotemporal dynamics of urban green space is still insufficient due to multiple challenges that remain in mapping green spaces within heterogeneous urban environments. This paper uses the city of Hangzhou to demonstrate an analysis methodo...

Energy landscape theories have provided a common ground for understanding the protein folding problem, which once seemed to be overwhelmingly complicated. At the same time, the native state was found to be an ensemble of interconverting states with frustration playing a more important role compared to the folding problem. The landscape of the folded protein - the native landscape - is glassier ...

Geographic Information tools (GI tools) have become an essential component of research in landscape ecology. In this article we review the use of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and GI tools in landscape ecology, with an emphasis on free and open source software (FOSS) projects. Specifically, we introduce the background and terms related to the free and open source software movement, then ...

After the 2008 crisis, smart sustainable development of port areas/cities should be developed on the basis of specific principles: the synergy principle (between different actors/systems, in particular the socio-cultural and economic system), the creativity principle and the circularization principle. The Historic Urban landscape (HUL) approach becomes the guarantee that the transition toward t...
