OBJECTIVES To evaluate the possible occurrence of carbapenemase-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. strains in domestic animals. METHODS Veterinary clinical E. coli (n = 1175) and Klebsiella spp. (n = 136) isolates consecutively collected from livestock and companion animals in Germany from June 2012 to October 2012 were screened for their susceptibility to carbapenems using the ag...

Three new cephalosporins, ceftazidime, ceftizoxime, and cefotiam, were evaluated in vitro against clinical isolates, and their activities were compared with those of other cephalosporins, mezlocillin, and tobramycin. All three new cephalosporins were very active against gram-positive cocci (except enterococci), but mezlocillin was more active against Streptococcus ssp. Cefotiam and cefamandole ...

A new national antimicrobial resistance surveillance program in Singapore public hospitals that uses WHONET detected high levels of methicillin resistance among Staphylococcus aureus (35.3%), carbapenem resistance among Acinetobacter spp. (49.6%), and third-generation cephalosporin resistance among Klebsiella pneumoniae (35.9%) hospital isolates in 2006. Antimicrobial drug resistance is a major...

INTRODUCTION Sub-therapeutic doses of antimicrobial agents are administered routinely to poultry to aid growth and to prevent disease, with prolonged exposure often resulting in bacterial resistance. Crossover of antibiotic resistant bacteria from poultry to humans poses a risk to human health. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this study, 17 chicken samples collected from a vendor operating in an info...

We examined Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. from US hospitals for class 1 integrons. Of 320 isolates, 181 (57%) were positive; association of integrons with resistance varied by drug and organism. Thus, determining integron epidemiology will improve understanding of how antibacterial resistance determinants spread in the United States.

Both ampicillin and cefuroxime therapy of neonates selected drug- and species-dependent beta-lactam resistance patterns in fecal strains of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. This was in contrast to our previous findings that ampicillin, but not cefuroxime, contributed to the emergence of beta-lactam resistance also by the promotion of nosocomial spread of resistant strains.

The antibacterial activity of the root, stem and leaf extracts of Excoecaria agallocha L. was tested against the test organisms Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella spp., Shigella sonnei and Staphylococcus aureus. The activity was tested both by agar well diffusion and disc diffusion methods. It was found that the extracts were very effective in controlling the...
