Broadband graphene oxide/PVA films were used as saturable absorbers (SAs) for mode locking erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) and ytterbium-doped fiber laser (YDFL) at 1.06 μm and 1.55 μm. They provide modulation depths of 3.15% and 6.2% for EDFL and YDFL, respectively. Stable self-starting mode-locked pulses are obtained for both lasers, confirming that the graphene oxide is cost-effective. We ha...

This work describes a rationalization of the interactions between two fully characterized graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and a set of significant target molecules. The GNRs were carefully synthesized by unzipping multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to yield graphene oxide nanoribbons (GNRox) containing 44 wt.% oxygen. The GNRox were reduced to yield reduced graphene oxide nanoribbons (GNRred) c...

Reduction of graphene oxide at the nanoscale is an attractive approach to graphene-based electronics. Here we use a platinum-coated atomic force microscope tip to locally catalyse the reduction of insulating graphene oxide in the presence of hydrogen. Nanoribbons with widths ranging from 20 to 80 nm and conductivities of >10(4) S m(-1) are successfully generated, and a field effect transistor i...

Chemically modified graphene platelets, produced via graphene oxide, show great promise in a variety of applications due to their electrical, thermal, barrier and mechanical properties. Understanding the chemical structures of chemically modified graphene platelets will aid in the understanding of their physical properties and facilitate development of chemically modified graphene platelet chem...

Graphene oxide (GO) is hydrophilic and swells significantly when in contact with water. Here, we investigate the change in thickness of multilayer graphene oxide membranes due to intercalation of water, via humidity-controlled observation in an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). The thickness increases reproducibly with increasing relative humidity. Electron energy loss spectros...

Water microdroplets containing graphene oxide and a second solute are shown to spontaneously segregate into sack-cargo nanostructures upon drying. Analytical modeling and molecular dynamics suggest the sacks form when slow-diffusing graphene oxide preferentially accumulates and adsorbs at the receding air-water interface, followed by capillary collapse. Cargo-filled graphene nanosacks can be na...

A foam-like graphene material can be prepared by freeze drying and thermal reduction of graphene oxide suspensions. The graphene foam has a much higher capacity then conventional graphite anode, and it possesses better rate capability comparing with powderlike graphene active materials reported previously. The influence of the annealing temperature on the charge-discharge performance of graphen...

Capacitive photocurrent spectroscopy is used to probe the electronic states of grapheneoxide, and reduced graphene-oxide. Three peaks are observed whose intensities scale with the oxygen coverage. The energy of these peaks correlate with the luminescence spectra reported for graphene-oxide. Using a fitting procedure, the density of states for graphene oxide is extracted from the data. It consis...
