The relation of orthostatic blood pressure decrease, or increase, with occurrence of ischemic stroke subtypes has not been examined. We investigated the association of orthostatic blood pressure change (within 2 minutes after supine to standing) obtained at baseline (1987 to 1989) in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study with incidence of ischemic stroke subtypes through 2007. Among 12 ...

BACKGROUND Low cardiorespiratory fitness is considered to be a major public health problem. We examined the relationship of cardiorespiratory fitness, as indicated by maximum oxygen consumption VO(2)max with subsequent incidence of stroke. We also compared VO(2)max with conventional risk factors as a predictor for future strokes. METHODS Population-based cohort study with an average follow-up...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The benefit of strict blood pressure (BP) control in high-risk patients with symptomatic major cerebral artery disease and misery perfusion (MP) is controversial. Our purposes were (1) to determine whether MP is a predictor of a 5-year risk of subsequent stroke and (2) to investigate the relationships among BP during follow-up, MP, and the stroke risk. METHODS We studie...

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to systematically compare clinical outcomes of patients treated with thrombolysis with those without treatment in a multi-year, multicenter cohort of strokes after cardiac catheterization. BACKGROUND Ischemic strokes after cardiac catheterization procedures, although uncommon, lead to the morbidity and mortality of thousands of patients each year. Desp...

Each year, approximately 795,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke. Of all strokes, 84% are ischemic, 13% are intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) strokes, and 3% are subarachnoid hemorrhage strokes. Despite the decreased incidence of ischemic stroke, there has been no change in the incidence of hemorrhagic stroke in the last decade. ICH is a devastating disease 37-38% of patients between t...

We present the first reported case of antiphospholipid syndrome with stroke in an Iranian boy (7-month-old) who had two ischemic strokes within a period of 2 months. Serum anticardiolipid antibody was positive and the patient had low levels of protein S and C. This case emphasizes the importance of antiphospholipid antibody in children with unexplained ischemic stroke.

Some patients with ischemic stroke are subject to hemorrhagic transformation, a complication leading to increased patient morbidity and mortality. The discovery of biomarkers that can be used to identify ischemic strokes prone to this complication are very important for the clinical practice because therapy could be altered to mitigate the risk. We discuss here the results of a trial that evalu...
