A CCUSTOMED as we now are to thousands of polymorphisms useful as human chromosome markers, it is hard to realize that in the first quarter century of Mendelism there was only one good marker. I t is a l l the more remarkable that its simple mode of inheritance was not understood until the trait had been known for 25 years. I T HAS BEEN proved by many authors that polycythemia induced by blood transfusion reduces the peripheral reticulocyte count and inhibits erythropoiesis. #{176} In previous investigations on erythropoiesis We have observed that polycythemia causes the appearance in the plasma of an active substance, which is antagonistic to erythropoietin. The plasma obtained from polycythemic animals was injec...

Decisions regarding new infectious marker testing and donor deferrals have typically been made emphasizing decreasing one specific risk without considering the effect the intervention will have on the overall safety and availability of blood transfusion. Regulat...

BACKGROUND No cases of transfusion-transmitted syphilis have been described for over four decades. While there is mandatory transfusion screening for syphilis, the absence of transmission is in part ascribed to a low prevalence of syphilis in the blood donor population, the concomitant use of antibiotics in a high proportion of transfusion recipients, allied with poor survival of T. pallidum du...
