A variety of fascinating morphological patterns arise on surfaces of growing, developing or aging tissues, organs and microorganism colonies. These patterns can be classified into creases, wrinkles, folds, period-doubles, ridges and delaminated-buckles according to their distinctive topographical characteristics. One universal mechanism for the pattern formation has been long believed to be the...

In this paper, we deal with the issues of single-beam collective effects (the bunch lengthening and the transverse mode-coupling instability) and coupled-bunch beam instabilities due to RF cavities and the resistive-wall beam pipes in the KEK B-factory. The transit ion problem and coupled-bunch instabilities due to photo-electrons will be discussed in other publications.

We summarize Session F of the ECLOUD’04 workshop. This session was dedicated to beam instabilities driven by electron cloud. Specifically, we discuss the principal observations of electron-cloud instabilities, analytical models, simulation codes and the next steps that need to be taken to arrive at a predictive theory.

The Modal Method by Gegenbauer polynomials Expansion (MMGE) has been recently introduced for lamellar gratings by Edee [8]. This method shows a promising potential of outstanding convergence but still suffers from instabilities when the number of polynomials is increased. In this work, we identify the origin of these instabilities and propose a way to remove them.

Long-wavelength instabilities of steady patterns, spatially periodic in three dimensions, are studied. All potentially stable patterns with the symmetries of the simple-, face-centered- and body-centered-cubic lattices are considered. The results generalize the well-known Eckhaus, zigzag, and skew-varicose instabilities to three-dimensional patterns and are applied to two-species reaction-diffu...

We present a numerical study of a two dimensional granular medium consisting of hard inelastic disks. The evolution of the medium throughout a cooling process is monitored. Two different types of instabilities (shearing and clustering instability) are found to develop in the system. The development of these instabilities is shown to be in qualitative and quantitative agreement with the predicti...

We give an overview of the basic physical concepts and analytical methods for investigating the symmetrybreaking instabilities of solitary waves. We discuss self-focusing of spatial optical solitons in di!ractive nonlinear media due to either transverse (one more unbounded spatial dimension) or modulational (induced by temporal wave dispersion) instabilities, in the framework of the cubic nonli...

GABAergic interneurons play a major role in the emergence of various types of synchronous oscillatory patterns of activity in the central nervous system. Motivated by these experimental facts, modeling studies have investigated mechanisms for the emergence of coherent activity in networks of inhibitory neurons. However, most of these studies have focused either when the noise in the network is ...

Traditionally the effects of MHD instabilities and micro-instabilities on plasma confinement are investigated separately. However, these two instabilities often occur simultaneously, with the overlap of the dynamics on a broad range of spatial scales. It is thus vital to incorporate these instabilities consistently by a proper multi-scale modeling. Furthermore, there has been an overwhelming ev...

Structures of thin films bonded on thick substrates are abundant in biological systems and engineering applications. Mismatch strains due to expansion of the films or shrinkage of the substrates can induce various modes of surface instabilities such as wrinkling, creasing, period doubling, folding, ridging, and delamination. In many cases, the film–substrate structures are not flat but curved. ...
