There is growing concern about the environmental, social and health consequences of development projects. Environmental impact assessment (EIA), which aims to address this concern, is often conducted with little input from the health sector. Quantifying the health benefits and risks of a project or policy requires an innovative synthesis of socio-demographic, environmental health, epidemiologic...

The photodissociation dynamics of propyne and allene are investigated in two molecular beam/ photodissociation instruments, one using electron impact ionization and the other using tunable vacuum ultraviolet ~VUV! light to photoionize the photoproducts. The primary dissociation channels for both reactants are C3H31H and C3H21H2. Measurement of the photoionization efficiency curves on the VUV in...

Electrical conductivity of a highly boron doped chemical vapor deposited diamond thin film has been studied at different temperatures under high electric field conditions. Current-voltage characteristics have been measured using pulsed technique to reduce thermal effects. Experimental results evidence deep impurity impact ionization avalanche in p-type diamond up to room temperature.

It has been claimed that the aggregation of information from several areas of life into a small set of global measures has certain advantages for describing disability. Global measures of disability were constructed from a modified version of an existing health survey instrument and the sickness impact profile (SIP) and their properties were tested. The disability items grouped satisfactorily i...

With the rapid feature size reduction of modern semiconductor devices accurate description of hot-carrier phenomena is becoming very important. Frequently used carrier transport models are the traditional drift-diffusion model and energytransport models which also consider the average carrier energy as an independent solution variable. Recent results show, however, that the average energy is in...

Gödel's legacy is still very much in evidence. We will not attempt to properly discuss the full impact of his work and all of the ongoing important research programs that it suggests. This would require a book length manuscript. Indeed, there are several books discussing the Gödel legacy from many points of view, including, for example, [Wa87], [Wa96], [Da05], and the historically comprehensive...

BACKGROUND Traffic and transport is a substantial part of a range of economic, social and environmental factors distinguished to have impact on human health. This paper is a report on a preliminary section of a Health Impact Assessment (HIA) on urban traffic and transport initiatives, being conducted in Sanandaj, Iran. In this preliminary study, the psychometric properties of Urban Traffic rela...

A giant magnetic-field-induced strain ~MFIS! of 23100 ppm has been obtained in Heusler alloy Ni52Mn22.2Ga25.8 single crystal in the @001# direction at a temperature from 23 to 31 °C. This MFIS reaches saturation in an applied field about 6 kOe, and exhibits the same amplitude with an opposite sign while the field is perpendicular to the samples. According to a previous model, this MFIS associat...

From 2005, a body of research undertaken at the University of Essex has developed a novel debug support architecture for systems on a chip (SoC). This platform successfully addresses the challenge of debugging applications executing on SoCs with multiple processor cores. A systemcentric architecture is used, which achieves substantial improvement in compression and requires dramatically less si...

We were the first to show that human stem cells could be used to create functional organ replacements in patients. These transplants, first performed to save the life of an adult in 2008, and then repeated to save a child in 2010, have changed the way the world views stem cell therapies. We have opened the door to a future where conventional transplantation, with all its technical, toxicity and...
