Borohydride reduction of a Borromean Ring (BR) complex containing six zinc(II) ions and 12 imine bonds has resulted in its demetallation, producing a neutral BR compound and also its free macrocycle, following cleavage of at least one of the imine bonds in the ethanolic reaction mixture.

Silica nanoparticles equipped with an artificial imine reductase display remarkable activity towards cyclic imine- and NAD(+) reduction. The method, based on immobilization and protection of streptavidin on silica nanoparticles, shields the biotinylated metal cofactor against deactivation yielding over 46 000 turnovers in pure samples and 4000 turnovers in crude cellular extracts.

The mol-ecule of the title Schiff base compound, C14H14N2O2, displays an E conformation with respect the imine C=N double bond. The mol-ecule is approximately planar, with the dihedral angle formed by the planes of the pyridine and benzene rings being 5.72 (6)°. There is an intra-molecular hydrogen bond involving the phenolic H and imine N atoms.

Selective oxidation of benzylic amines to imines with atmospheric O2 is achieved in water on TiO2 under UV irradiation. The afforded imine could be easily separated and TiO2 can be recycled by filtration. To scale up, gram-scale imine products can be obtained.
