1. The role of water balance in the hypokalaemia of rats with diabetes insipidus (DI rats) was studied. 2. After a 3-day balance study DI rats had a lower muscle potassium content, and plasma [K+], and the urinary excretion of potassium in response to oral KCl loading was reduced when compared to normal rats. The hypokalaemia was found to be associated with elevated concentrations of potassium ...

A case of primary renal renin secretion of probable neoplastic origin is reported. Investigation demonstrated renin secretion to be incompletely autonomous with suboptimal suppression to posture and hypervolaemia. Easy control of the hypertension and hypokalaemia was achieved with an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor. Such treatment may prove to be a preferable option to surgery.

We analysed the clinical outcomes of using a standardised protocol in the management of diabetic ketoacidosis. Of 71 admissions, the protocol group (n=35) had significantly shorter length of hospitalisation, shorter time to normalise bicarbonate, fewer incidence of hypokalaemia and hypoglycaemia compared with the control group (n=36).

We present an unusual case of extreme metabolic alkalosis resulting from severe hypokalaemia caused by unmonitored fludrocortisone therapy. Biochemical aspects of the disorder are discussed, as is the successful treatment with diuretics and potassium replacement. Some dangers of this therapy and necessary precautions are emphasized.

We report a case of distal renal tubular acidosis in a twenty year old female patient of scleroderma and secondary Sjogren's syndrome. This patient presented with two episodes of flaccid quadriparesis which were associated with hypokalaemia and was later found to have an underlying scleroderma with secondary Sjogren's syndrome.
