Microbial communities in hot springs at high elevations have been extensively studied worldwide. In this sense, the Indian Himalaya regions is valuable ecosystems for providing both the extreme 'cold' and 'hot' sites for exploring microbial diversity. In the present study, a total of 140 thermophilic bacteria were isolated from 12 samples collected from Manikaran and Yumthang hot springs of Ind...
Geothermal resource potential at Brady’s Hot Springs is well expressed by a series of active vents and fumaroles, readily seen at the surface. This potential is currently exploited for both power production and at-source use (garlic drying). At Brady’s Hot Springs the location of the Brady’s Fault is strongly expressed by a linear trend of fumaroles that extend a distance of approximately 4 km....
Introduction: Many people use hot water springs to treat some diseases, such as rheumatism, arthritis, and skin diseases, but they are unaware of the presence of natural radioactive substances that may be found in hot water springs. An effective way to understand the radiation risk of these elements are measuring the dose rate of radiation. In this study, for the first time, ga...
BACKGROUND Screening is a routine procedure for isolation of microorganisms which are able to produce special metabolites. Purified thermostable α-amylase from bacterial sources is widely used in different industries. In this study we analyzed samples collected from three different hot springs in Iran to detect any strains capable of producing thermostable α-amylase. MATERIALS AND METHODS Hot...
Four different types of adaptation to sulfide among cyanobacteria are described based on the differential toxicity to sulfide of photosystems I and II and the capacity for the induction of anoxygenic photosynthesis. Most cyanobacteria are highly sensitive to sulfide toxicity, and brief exposures to low concentrations cause complete and irreversible cessation of CO(2) photoassimilation. Resistan...
The boundary between the African and Arabian plates in the Southern Red Sea region is displaced inland in the northern Afar rift, where it is marked by the Red Sea-parallel Erta Ale, Alaita, and Tat Ali volcanic ridges. The Erta Ale is offset by about 20 and 40 km from the two en echelon ridges to the south. The offset area is highly seismic and marked by a depression filled by lake Afrera, a s...
Bacterial and archaeal diversity in geothermal spring water were investigated using 16S rRNA gene amplicon metagenomic sequencing. This revealed the dominance of Firmicutes, Aquificae, and the Deinococcus-Thermus group in this thermophilic environment. A number of sequences remained taxonomically unresolved, indicating the presence of potentially novel microbes in this unique habitat.
The preliminary results of a geochemical survey of fumaroles and hot springs in the Torfajökull geothermal area, South Iceland, are presented. The total gas content in fumarole steam ranges from about 20 to roughly 25,000 mmole/kg, with carbon dioxide as the main component. Gas geothermometers indicate subsurface temperatures of about 300°C in the northern, western, and central parts of the are...
