Background: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is a self-limiting viral infection that can lead to severe complications and death. In different regions the epidemiology of this infection varies. In this study we evaluated the seroepidemiology of hepatitis E infection in Jahrom, a city in southern Iran. Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study of serum samples from 477 subjects, i...

The hepatitis E virus (HEV) is one of the main causes acute and de facto global burden underestimated. HEV-related clinical complications are often undetected not considered in differential diagnosis. Convincing findings from studies suggest that HEV clinically relevant only developing countries but also industrialized countries. Eight genotypes (HEV-1 to HEV-8) with different human animal host...

The risk and importance of transfusion-transmitted hepatitis E virus (TT-HEV) infections by contaminated blood products is currently a controversial discussed topic in transfusion medicine. The infectious dose, in particular, remains an unknown quantity. In the present study, we illuminate and review this aspect seen from the viewpoint of a blood donation service with more than 2 years of exper...

On behalf of all of the coauthors, I would like to thank Dr. Kamar for his interest in our study. In the letter, Dr. Kamar summarized the most important findings on hepatitis E infection in organ transplant recipients (1), most of whom have relied on the valuable contributions by of Dr. Kamar’s group in France (2-4). In our study, we noted a high seroprevalence of anti-HEV IgG. Almost 30% of tr...

BACKGROUND Hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotype 3 is recognised as an emerging pathogen in industrialised countries. The currently commercially available HEV-specific enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) are primarily designed for the detection of antibodies against genotypes 1 (Burma) and 2 (Mexico) and may not sensitively detect HEV genotypes 3 or 4. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evalua...

BACKGROUND Hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) are both transmitted by the faecal-oral route, and represent common causes of acute hepatitis in developing countries. The endemicity of HAV infection has shifted from high to moderate in Brazil. Human cases of HEV infection seem to be rare, although the virus has been detected in swine livestock and effluents of slaughterhouses. Th...

We recently identified and characterized a novel virus, designated avian hepatitis E virus (avian HEV), from chickens with hepatitis-splenomegaly syndrome (HS syndrome) in the United States. Avian HEV is genetically related to but distinct from human and swine HEVs. To determine the extent of genetic variation and the seroprevalence of avian HEV infection in chicken flocks, we genetically ident...

We identified hepatitis E virus (HEV) in rabbits in Virginia, USA. HEV RNA was detected in 14 (16%) of 85 serum samples and 13 (15%) of 85 fecal samples. Antibodies against HEV were detected in 31 (36%) of 85 serum samples. Sequence analyses showed that HEV from rabbits is closely related to genotype 3.

Hepatitis E virus genotype 3 (HEV-3) is the causal pathogen of chronic hepatitis E. We report here the full-length genome sequence of an HEV-3 strain, isolated from a kidney transplant recipient in Switzerland (SW/16-0282). This HEV-3 strain showed less than 88% homology compared to known strains, suggesting a new HEV-3 strain.

In the United States, the seroprevalence rate for hepatitis E virus (HEV) is approximately 20%. This study examined HEV seroprevalence in persons with and without chronic liver disease. Our data indicate that HEV seropositivity is high in patients with chronic liver disease and that HEV seroprevalence increases significantly with age.
