Introduction: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common causes of infections in hospitals and vancomycin is used for the treatment of methicillin resistant S, aureus infections. Therefore, imergence of Staphylococcus aureus with reduced sensitivity to vancomycin is a serious problem. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus with reduced suscep...

Since the discovery, development, and US Food and Drug Administration approval of vancomycin in the 1950s, this agent has remained a mainstay for the treatment of infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). However, because of the development of new antistaphylococcal antibiotics and reports of vancomycin failures, the utility of vancomycin has recently been questio...

staphylococcus aureus, as one of the main agentsfor hospital infections,is considered as highly important because they show resistance to a wide range of antibiotics.resistance to selective antibiotics such as vancomycin is a serious problemin the medical community; thus it seems rational to use alternative substances for treating these bacteria.the aim of this study isto investigate the preval...

We developed two colorimetric methods for the detection of vancomycin- and oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in </=6 h: (i) a nitrate reductase assay and (ii) a resazurin microplate method. MICs agreed with results obtained by CLSI methods for oxacillin. However, detection of vancomycin resistance required a larger inoculum. These methods may be recommended for the detection of vancomyc...

A nasal carriage survey for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in an intensive care unit detected four strains of MRSA with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin. The vanA gene was found in two of these vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA) strains. The absence of selective vancomycin pressure might have resulted in reduced expression of the resistant gene.

Vancomycin-sensitive, -intermediate, and -heterointermediate methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates were tested by using E-tests to explore the interaction of methicillin and vancomycin. For the vancomycin-intermediate and -heterointermediate strains both drugs showed antagonism at concentrations below their MICs but synergy at methicillin concentrations near the MIC. This propert...

Staphylococcus aureus is the leading cause of many human infectious diseases. Besides infectious dangers, S. aureus is well-known for the quickly developed drug resistance. Although great efforts have been made, mechanisms underlying the antibiotic effects of S. aureus are still not well clarified. Recently, reports have shown that oxidative stress connects with bactericidal antibiotics [Dwyer ...

We describe here the genetic analysis of a vancomycin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (VSSA) strain, Mu50Omega, a strain related to vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (VISA) strain Mu50. Using a combination of Mu50Omega whole-genome sequencing and genome engineering, we observed a stepwise evolution of vancomycin resistance from VSSA to VISA after the mutated vraS and graR genes of Mu50 were e...

Vancomycin is considered the goldstandard treatment for infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In recent years, reduced susceptibility of S. aureus to vancomycin has emerged. This problem seems to be based on the increased use of vancomycin, with characteristic poor tissue penetration, slow bactericidal activity and risk of nephrotoxicity resulting lack of elim...
