A male-specific component, 11-cis-vaccenyl acetate (cVA) works as an anti-aphrodisiac pheromone in Drosophila melanogaster. The presence of cVA on a male suppresses the courtship motivation of other males and contributes to suppression of male-male homosexual courtship, while the absence of cVA on a female stimulates the sexual motivation of nearby males and enhances the male-female interaction...

The time course of the recovery cycle (refractory period) of the acoustic startle response in rats was determined. The refractory effect was shown to be highly dependent upon the interval between two startle stimuli but independent of the intensity of the stimuli at a given interval, provided that the intensity of both stimuli was the same. A model based on summation of refractory effects to re...

Money doesn’t seem to make us happy for reasons of social comparison and habituation. But does that necessarily mean that we would be better off doing something else instead? This paper suggests that the phenomena of comparison and habituation are actually found in a variety of economic and social activities, rendering policy conclusions more difficult. JEL Classification Codes: D01, D31, H00, ...

We transfer a neuronal model of the biological phenomenon of habituation, where repeated stimuli begin to be ignored, onto a mobile robot. Results demonstrating the validity of the model are given. Applications of habituation to mobile robots are suggested and areas of further research are presented.

Recent studies show that specific regions of the cortex contribute to modulation of appetitive behaviors. The purpose of this study was to determine whether neural response in these regions changes over time when a taste stimulus is administered repeatedly. Such a paradigm may be useful for determining whether altered habituation contributes to disturbed eating behavior. This study used a progr...

Schizophrenia has long been associated with abnormal patterns of arousal that are thought to reflect disturbances in the reticular-activating system of the brain. Psychophysiological investigations of sensory responsivity have repeatedly demonstrated reduced reactivity and habituation to moderately intense stimuli in patients with schizophrenia. While not traditionally used as a measure of phys...

Earlier work showed that playbacks of conspecific song induce expression of the immediate early gene ZENK in the caudo-medial neostriatum (NCM) of awake male zebra finches and that this response disappears with repeated presentations of the same stimulus. In the present study, we investigated whether repetitions of a song stimulus also elicited a decrement in the electrophysiological responses ...

Startle habituation is a type of implicit and automatic emotion regulation. Diminished startle habituation is linked to several psychiatric or neurological disorders. Most previous studies quantified startle habituation by assessing skin conductance response (SCR; reflecting sympathetic-mediated sweating), eye-blink reflex, or motor response. The habituation of parasympathetic-mediated heart ra...

Acute exposure to stress leads to activation of the pituitary-adrenal axis (PA-axis) while repeated exposure to a homotypic stressor generally results in habituation of this response. Previous studies suggested that such habituation is largely due to changes in afferents of the PA-axis. To examine where within these afferents habituation occurs, we studied the effect of acute and repeated expos...
