BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Esophageal leaks are a potentially life-threatening condition. One treatment option is injection therapy with commercially available fibrin glue. We describe herein a method to close esophageal leaks by injecting autologous fibrin glue prepared exclusively with the patient's own blood.

In recent years, treatment techniques in which polyglycolic acid sheets are applied to various situations with fibrin glue have exhibited great clinical potential, and previous studies have reported safety and efficacy. We describe closure of a non-healing perforated duodenal ulcer with the use of a polyglycolic acid sheet and fibrin glue in an elderly patient who was not a candidate for surgery.

Purpose: To compare recurrence rate, complications, and biomicroscopical findings after conjunctival autograft pterygium surgery with the use of a fibrin glue (Tissucol Duo®, Baxter AG, Vienna, Austria) or suture (7-0 silk). Methods: Patients with nasal pterygium were included in two groups of conjunctival autograft surgery. In 9 of them the graft was sutured to the surrounding conjunctiva and ...

BACKGROUND Individuals with impaired immunity are at higher risk of perianal diseases. Concerning complex anal fistulas impaired healing and complication rates are also higher. Definitive treatment of a fistula aims controlling the purulent discharge and prevents its recurrence. It depends mainly on the trajectory of the fistula and the underlying disease. We present a case of a HIV-positive pa...

BACKGROUND Because an excessive use of activator (formaldehyde + glutaraldehyde) is supposed to be responsible for later adverse events after the use of gelatin resorcin formalin (GRF) glue in surgery for acute aortic dissection, we have tried to use a minimum dose of activator when the GRF glue was applied. We compare our midterm surgical results for acute aortic dissection with and without th...

The terrestrial slug Arion subfuscus secretes a glue that is a dilute gel with remarkable adhesive and cohesive strength. The function of this glue depends on metals, raising the possibility that metal-catalyzed oxidation plays a role. The extent and time course of protein oxidation was measured by immunoblotting to detect the resulting carbonyl groups. Several proteins, particularly one with a...

For tissue engineering of bone, a carrier matrix and efficient cell seeding are desirable. This study analysed the effect of fibrin glue on bone marrow stromal cells (BMSC) adhesion, proliferation (MTS-Test), differentiation (alkaline phosphatase (AP), osteocalcin (OC), ELISA) and compared the results with cells seeded within culture media on a decellularized, xenogenic bone matrix. There was n...

The aged-rejuvenation-glue-liquid (ARGL) shear band model has been proposed for metallic glasses (Acta Mater. 54 (2006) 4293), based on small-scale molecular dynamics simulations up to 20,000 atoms and thermomechanical analysis. The model predicts the existence of a critical lengthscale 10 nm, above which melting could occur in shear-alienated glass. Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations w...

AIM Fibrin glue becomes a more and more routinely used tool for stabilization of microanastomoses and nerve repair. This paper summarizes the technical properties and advantages of its use in a wide variety of microsurgical contexts, and includes an exemplary limb reconstructive case. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 131 patients who had undergone elective and emergency microsurgery mainly of ...
