Male and female Wistar rats with high and low hepatic microsomal UDP-glucuronosyltransferase activity towards androsterone were classified by partial hepatectomy. The breeding experiments between the classified high-activity and low-activity rats show that the genetic expression of the high transferase activity is inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion.

The UGT1 locus is felt to be highly conserved between species, as is evident from the characterization of the locus in rodents and humans. In rabbits, cDNAs encoding proteins homologous to human UGT1A4, UGT1A6, and UGT1A7 have previously been identified. Here we demonstrate by Southern blot analysis, using exon 1 divergent 5' segments from rabbit UGT1A4 and UGT1A6 cDNAs, the existence of a clus...

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) alpha and gamma are ligand-activated transcription factors belonging to the nuclear receptor family. PPAR alpha mediates the hypolipidemic action of the fibrates, whereas PPAR gamma is a receptor for the antidiabetic glitazones. In the present study, the UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 1A9 enzyme is identified as a PPAR alpha and PPAR gamma ta...

The UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 1A9 has been shown to play an important role in the detoxification of several carcinogens and clearance of anticancer and pain medications. The goal of the present study was to identify novel polymorphisms in UGT1A9 and characterize their effect on glucuronidation activity. The UGT1A9 gene was analyzed by direct sequencing of buccal cell genomic DNA from 90...

The objective of this study was to investigate variations in UGT1A1 polymorphisms and haplotypes among African-American and Caucasian women and to assess whether variants other than UGT1A1*28 are associated with total serum bilirubin levels. The (TA)(n) repeats and 14 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the UGT1A1 gene were genotyped in 335 African Americans and 181 Caucasians. Total seru...
