Giardia duodenalis is a parasite of great medical interest due to the number infections it causes worldwide each year. Although research on epigenetic mechanisms in this protist has only begun recently, regulation already been shown have important roles encystation, antigenic variation, and resistance antibiotics Giardia. In work, we show that ortholog Sir2, GdSir2.4, involved silencing rRNA ex...

Sensitivities of DNA extraction methods and PCR methods for Giardia duodenalis were evaluated. A combination of the most sensitive methods, i.e., FTA filter paper and a PCR protocol using RH11/RH4 and GiarF/GiarR primers, showed no significant differences compared to immunofluorescence assay in terms of their sensitivities and specificities.

Waterway degradation in agricultural settings is caused by direct and diffuse sources of pollution. Waterway fencing focuses on reducing direct faecal contamination, but the extent to which it reduces overland surface runoff of pathogens is unknown. This study evaluated the potential of four riparian treatments to reduce Giardia in saturation excess surface runoff entering the waterway. Treatme...

Zinc supplementation has been shown to reduce the incidence and prevalence of diarrhea; however, its anti-diarrheal effect remains only partially understood. There is now growing evidence that zinc can have pathogen-specific protective effects. Giardiasis is a common yet neglected cause of acute-chronic diarrheal illness worldwide which causes disturbances in zinc metabolism of infected childre...
