In analogy with the two categories of reactants which are used in the serological tests for the unusual category of macroglobulins called rheumatoid factor, two fluorescent reactants have been prepared for the detection of rheumatoid factor in situ in tissue sections: fluorescent antigen-rabbit antibody (immune) complex, in the present study, and fluorescent aggregated human gamma-globulin, in ...
Previous studies have shown that acute unilateral nephrectomy stimulates sodium (UNaV) and potassium (UKV) excretion by the remaining kidney through reflex pathways requiring an intact pituitary gland, and the natriuresis is accompanied by an increase in the plasma concentration of a peptide or peptides derived from the adrenocorticotropic hormone-beta-endorphin precursor molecule pro-opiomelan...
Scoping studies were designed whereby double-crested cormorants (Phalacocorax auritus) were dosed with artificially weathered Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil either daily through oil injected feeder fish, or by application of oil directly to feathers every three days. Preening results in oil ingestion, and may be an effective means of orally dosing birds with toxicant to improve our understanding o...
T latest issue of May 2016 of JAPI has reported an interesting case of Behcet’s disease, suspected clinically and confirmed with other features from the ISG criteria. The ISG criteria1 for Behcet’s, created in 1990, have excellent specificity, but lack sensitivity. The International Criteria for Behcet’s Disease (ICBD) was created in 2006, as replacement to ISG. However, we feel that it would b...
Guinea pig 7S immunoglobulins (gamma(1) and gamma(2)) consist of two groups of molecules (K and L) bearing different types of L chains (kappa and lambda). Approximately one-third of the molecules in normal guinea pig gamma(2)-globulin bear the lambda- type of L chains, and all or most of the others bear kappa-chains. kappa- and lambda-chains have similar molecular weights.
Methods for detecting insulin binding or transporting antibodies are described, involving the use of radioactively labelled insulin (insulin (131)I). These antibodies are detected in a high proportion of patients receiving insulin, particularly those requiring large doses. The protein fractions concerned appear to be the beta and gamma globulins. The significance of the phenomenon is discussed.
