A novel design of a microbial fuel cell is realized by constructing bio-cocatalyst beads immobilized with riboflavin-secreting Escherichia coli and decoupling them from an anodic biocatalyst. A microbial fuel cell loaded with these bio-cocatalyst beads shows significantly enhanced performance without occupying an active electrode surface area.

A mediatorless microbial fuel cell based on the direct biocatalysis of Escherichia coli shows significantly enhanced performance by using bacteria electrochemically-evolved in fuel cell environments through a natural selection process and a carbon/PTFE composite anode with an optimized PTFE content.

The performance characteristics of anode-supported, thin-film, single chamber fuel cells (SCFCs) have been investigated. Cells, in which Ni+Sm0.15Ce0.85O2 (Samaria doped ceria, SDC) served as the anode and SDC as the electrolyte, were fabricated by dry pressing. High quality, bilayer structures with electrolyte thicknesses as small as 10 Am were prepared with excellent reproducibility. The cath...

The development of dynamic simulation tools for fuel cell systems and fuel cell/gas turbine (FC/GT) systems is required to understand the response of fuel cell systems to both scheduled and unscheduled perturbations. These tools supply the foundation on which control strategies can be developed and tested before they are actually implemented in a physical system. For high temperature fuel cell ...

The molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) has evolved to current megawatt-scale commercial power plants. When using the fuel cell for electrolysis (MCEC), it provides a promising option for producing fuel gases such as hydrogen, via water electrolysis, and syngas, via co-electrolysis of water and carbon dioxide. The molten carbonate cell can thereby operate reversibly as a dual energy converter for...

Low cost, durable, and selective membranes with high ionic conductivity are a priority need for wide-spread adoption of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Electrolyte membranes are a major cost component of PEMFC stacks at low production volumes. PEMFC membranes also impose limitations on fuel cell system operating conditions that add system...

A mathematical framework that provides practical guidelines for user adoption is proposed fuel cell performance evaluation. By leveraging the framework, two measures describe average and worst-case are presented. To facilitate computation of in a setting, we model distribution voltages at different current points as Gaussian process. Then minimum number samples needed to estimate obtained using...
