Finnegan, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Biomimetic Flapping Foil Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (BFFAUV), was developed to explore the use of two degree of freedom oscillating foils as the sole means of propulsion and maneuvering for an underwater vehicle. Two pairs of foils with 0.4m span x 0.1m chord are used, with one pair forward and one pair aft of the center of gravity, with th...
The International Moth is an ultra-lightweight foiling dinghy class. Foil deflections and dynamic sailor-induced motions are identified as two key areas relating to foiling moth performance that are currently ignored in Velocity Prediction Programs (VPP). The impact of foil deflections is assessed by measuring the tip deflection and twist deformation of a T-foil from an International Moth. The ...
The hydrodynamics and energetics of bioinspired oscillating mechanisms have received significant attentions by engineers and biologists to develop the underwater and air vehicles. Undulating and pure heaving (or plunging) motions are two significant mechanisms which are utilized in nature to provide propulsive, maneuvering, and stabilization forces. This study aims to elucidate and compare the ...
The magnetic compass orientation of birds is light dependent. The respective directional information, originating in radical pair processes, is mediated by the right eye. These findings suggest possible interactions between magnetoreception and vision, in particular with the perception of contours, because the right eye has been found to be dominant in discrimination tasks requiring object visi...
foil is a rst-order learning system that uses information in a collection of relations to construct theories expressed in a dialect of Prolog. This paper provides an overview of the principal ideas and methods used in the current version of the system, including two recent additions. We present examples of tasks tackled by foil and of systems that adapt and extend its approach.
Introduction: An enigma of Venusian mineralogy is the suggestion that Fe3+bearing minerals exist under the reducing conditions of the Venusian atmosphere. Analysis of the spectrophotometric data from the Venera 13 and 14 missions, combined with the laboratory reflectance spectral measurements of oxidized basalts at elevatedtemperatures, led to the suggestion that metastable hematite might exist...
TiN nanotube arrays, prepared by the anodization of metallic Ti foil substrate and subsequent simple nitridation in an ammonia atmosphere, were investigated as low-cost counter electrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells for the first time. It is found that the highly ordered TiN nanotube arrays on the metallic Ti foil substrate show an excellent performance, comparable with typical Pt counter ele...
An accurate value for the radiative lifetime of the 2s 2p~(~P) 3s ~P~ level in N II has been obtained using the beam-foil-laser spectroscopy method. The result (T = 0.456 ± 0.020 ns ) is shorter than the beam-foil lifetime values reported previously for the 3s' ~P term. No theoretical value for the lifetime of this term is available at the present time.
People can employ adaptive strategies to increase the likelihood that previously encoded information will be successfully retrieved. One such strategy is to constrain retrieval toward relevant information by reimplementing the neurocognitive processes that were engaged during encoding. Using EEG, we examined the temporal dynamics with which constraining retrieval toward semantic versus nonseman...
BACKGROUND The use of a resorbable implant connected with septal cartilage would facilitate external septoplasty, offering mechanical stability until the cartilage fragments heal. OBJECTIVE To study the histological and clinical results of septoplasty with a resorbable implant (polydioxanone [PDS; Ethicon, Norderstedt, Germany]) in conjunction with cartilage. DESIGN To provide histological ...
