This paper describes current treatment strategies of distal femoral fractures as well as their evidence based rationale. The treatment of distal femoral fractures has improved with the evolution of plating and nailing technologies. The commonly selected surgical approaches are outlined and surgical treatment techniques including both internal and external fixation are discussed.
PURPOSE To evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes of using fibular strut grafts as a fixation device for non-united femoral neck fractures in children with or without subtrochanteric valgus osteotomy. METHODS A total of 12 children with non-united femoral neck fractures (nine males and three females) with an average age of 8.2 years (5 to 12) were managed, and functional results eval...
PURPOSE Owing to unpredictable femoral neck reduction, reconstruction nails are not suitable for fixation of group 3 ipsilateral femoral neck-shaft fractures. We developed a new one-step fixation technique to overcome this problem. This study aims to assess this new technique at the Orthopaedic Department, Chi-Mei Foundation Medical Center, Tainan. METHODS Of 31 consecutive patients with femo...
Femoral neck fractures are common in the elderly after low-energy falls. They are broadly grouped into either intracapsular or extracapsular fractures. We report an unusual subcapital femoral neck intra-extracapsular fracture and discuss the management of such a case with its inherent problems.
Hoffa fractures are known as coronal fractures of the femoral condyle and are rare injuries account for less than 1% of distal femur fractures [1-4]. The association of Hoffa fracture and proximal tibial fractures is even rarer [5]. It is an intraarticular fracture of the posterior aspect of the femoral condyle in coronal plane, resulting from high-energy traumas motor vehicle accidents (most c...
Fifty-six patients with ununited intracapsular fractures of the femoral neck were treated by internal fixation and muscle-pedicle bone grafting. All had some absorption of the femoral neck, and many had avascular necrosis of the femoral head. At operation the sclerosed surfaces of the fractures were freshened, the avascular femoral head was decompressed and the muscle-pedicle graft was fixed wi...
The AO interlocking nail was introduced to the Ulster Hospital, Dundonald in 1988 and since then has been used in over 50 patients with femoral shaft fractures. We have reviewed 45 patients with 46 femoral shaft fractures treated between June 1988 and April 1990. These included four compound fractures and 13 comminuted fractures. The results compare favourably with other series. The union rate ...
PURPOSE Rigid interlocking nailing for femoral shaft fracture is ideal for use in adolescents in terms of stability of the fracture and convenience for the patient. However, numerous authors have reported that rigid interlocking nailing has some limitations in this age group due to the risk of complications. We evaluated the results of intramedullary nailing for femoral shaft fractures with an ...
INTRODUCTION Some authors have hypothesised that atypical femur fractures occur due to tensile mechanism of failure. We studied the distribution of such lesions along the femur shaft to determine if they concentrate in regions that are subject to tensile loading. METHODS From May 2004 to March 2010, radiological reviews of 48 patients aged 69 +/- 10.4 (range 47-92) years with atypical femoral...
