Intravenous contrast agents are frequent adjuncts used in diagnostic imaging. Despite the well-recognized complications of contrast media extravasation, its treatment remains an enigma to many. This article reviews the recognition, prevention and treatment options, with a summary of the contrast media extravasation policy implemented in our department.
Catheter-Induced Pulmonary Artery Dissection and Contrast Extravasation During Pulmonary Angiography
Pulmonary artery injury during pulmonary angiography is an uncommon complication. We describe two cases of iatrogenic pulmonary artery extravasation that resulted from the use of pigtail catheters for pulmonary angiography. No further complications occurred and no treatment was necessary in either case. Thus, mild contrast extravasation appears to be a self-limited complication that likely requ...
We describe the 3D digital subtraction angiography (3D-DSA) image of extravasation from a rupturing aneurysm. This image clearly showed that the extravasation was coming from a pseudoaneurysm on an aneurysmal wall. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a 3D-DSA image of a rupturing aneurysm.
Cytostatic drugs extravasation is the serious side effect of chemotherapy. It may lead to health-threatening complications as well as to impairment of cancer patients quality of life. Prevention, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment significantly reduce the consequences of extravasation. Training of medical staff and patients education have enormous importance on this point.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The "spot sign" or contrast extravasation is strongly associated with hematoma formation and growth. An animal model of contrast extravasation is important to test existing and novel therapeutic interventions to inform present and future clinical studies. The purpose of this study was to create an animal model of contrast extravasation in acute intracerebral hemorrhage. ...

BMJ Case Rep Published online: [please include Day Month Year] doi:10.1136/ bcr-2013-009711 DESCRIPTION A woman diagnosed with breast cancer was previously treated with surgery and chemotherapy before being referred to us for radiotherapy. During planning radiotherapy, an incidental observation was made of a conspicuous discolouration over ...
The most common non-neoplastic lesion of salivary gland tissue is the mucocele (also called sialocele and ptyalocele). A mucocele is defined as the pooling of mucin in a cystic cavity. Two types of mucoceles are recognized: (1) the retention type, in which the mucin pooling is confined within a dilated excretory duct or cyst, and (2) the extravasation type, in which mucin is spilled into the co...
Abstract Background Extravasation of radiopharmaceuticals used for vectorized internal radiotherapy can lead to severe tissue damage (van der Pol et al., Eur J Nucl Med Mol Imaging 44:1234–1243, 2017). Clinical management these extravasations requires the preliminary estimation dose distribution in extravasation area. Data are scarce regarding literature. This work presents a methodology estima...
