BACKGROUND To investigate the epidemiology of a steep decrease in the incidence of suicide deaths in Australia. METHODS National data on suicide deaths and deliberate self-harm for the period 1994-2007 were obtained from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. We calculated attempt and death rates for five major methods and the lethality of these methods. Negative binomial regression ...

Reported herein is the suicidal asphyxiation of a young man due to exhaustion of oxygen in the interior of a sealed automobile into which the exhaust emissions were diverted. His blood carboxyhemaglobin concentration was less than 5% saturation. The car was equipped with a catalytic converter and when tested, the exhaust carbon monoxide concentration was 0.01%.

The measurement of diesel vehicle exhaust particulate mass is currently accomplished using filter collection methods according to the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Such filter methods limit time resolution to a minimum of several minutes, making it impossible to study emissions during transient operating conditions. Extensive testing of five different measurement methods has demonstrated t...

The rapid development of the shipping industry has brought great economic benefits but at a great environmental cost; exhaust emissions originating from ships are increasing, causing serious atmospheric pollution. Hence, the mitigation of ship exhaust emissions and the establishment of the sustainable ecosystem have become urgent tasks, which will require complicated and comprehensive systemati...

In this paper, the influence of the gas exchange process on the diesel engine thermal overload is provided. Main components involved in the gas exchange process are discussed. The ambient conditions, the turbocharger performance, and the valve timing that affect the gas exchange process have been investigated. Experiments were conducted to simulate ambient conditions at different geographical l...

[1] The heating of ions downstream of the x-line during magnetic reconnection is explored using full-particle simulations, test particle simulations, and analytic analysis. Large-scale particle simulations reveal that the ion temperature increases sharply across the boundary layer that separates the upstream plasma from the Alfvénic outflow. This boundary layer, however, does not take the form ...

The results of large-scale, particle-in-cell simulations are presented on the role of Hall electric and magnetic fields on the structure of the electron dissipation region and outflow exhaust during the collisionless magnetic reconnection of antiparallel fields. The simulations reveal that the whistler wave plays the key role in driving the electrons away from the magnetic x-line. Further downs...

The modeling of turbocharged diesel engine transient operation appeared in the early 1970s and continues to be in the focal point of research due to the importance of transient response in the everyday operating conditions of engines. Simulations of various levels of complexity have been used so far to study engine performance during transients. On the other hand, the very important issue of ex...
