In the late 1960s, Georges Canguilhem introduced the concept of 'scientific ideology'. This concept had not played any role in his previous work, so why introduce it at all? This is the central question of my paper. Although it may seem a rather modest question, its answer in fact uncovers hidden tensions in the tradition of historical epistemology, in particular between its normative and descr...
Folk epistemology refers to a range of cognitive skills that involve epistemic concepts such as knowledge and truth. As human beings we are able to assess the truth of an utterance by another agent or whether an inference someone makes is valid. We can evaluate to what extent sources we acquire information from are reliable and whether new information we acquire should lead to belief revision. ...
Abstract Vice epistemology studies how character traits, attitudes, or thinking styles systematically get in the way of knowledge, while doxastic responsibility is concerned with what kinds responses are appropriate towards agents who believe badly. This paper identifies a new connection between these two fields, arguing that our propensity to take for failures directly relevant vice epistemolo...

In this article I explore a disposition towards critique of ‘reductionism’ and ‘determinism’ that seems to me be very much prevalent within British sociology. take qualitative educational sociology uses Bourdieusian concepts as one body research where is expressed with particular fervour. A close examination work reveals its tacit acceptance the limits specific, mostly statistical, classificati...
I respond to John Greco’s argument that all forms of internalism in epistemology are either false or uninteresting. The paper divides into two sections. First, I explain precisely what internalists and externalists in epistemology disagree over. This puts us in a position to assess whether Greco’s argument succeeds. Second, I present Greco’s argument and offer two objections.
It is by now commonplace that analytic epistemology has moved beyond its oftlamented obsession of safeguarding the analysis of knowledge from Gettier cases. One outflow of post-Gettier epistemology is the scrutiny of the social dimensions of knowing and believing. There are lively debates about testimony, assertion, disagreement, group knowledge, collective practices of inquiry, epistemic divis...
In this paper I explore some connections between the epistemology of modality and the epistemology of mathematics, and argue that they have far more in common than it may initially seem to be the case—even though modality need not (in fact, should not) be characterized in terms of possible worlds (as the modal realist insists) and mathematics need not (in fact, should not) be understood in term...
