To identify Rns-regulated genes, a maltose binding protein (MBP)-Rns fusion protein was used to isolate DNA fragments from enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli genomic DNA that carry Rns binding sites. In vivo transcription fusion analysis shows that Rns positively regulates the expression of the open reading frame of yiiS, which lies immediately downstream of one MBP-Rns-bound fragment.

The genetic backgrounds of 24 enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains from Mexico and Guatemala expressing heat-stable toxin (ST) and coli surface antigen 6 (CS6) were analyzed. US travelers to these countries and resident children in Guatemala were infected by ETEC strains of sequence type 398, expressing STp and carrying genetically identical CS6 sequences.

A rapid multiplex PCR approach was developed to detect the bft gene subtypes in Bacteroides fragilis clinical isolates. This technique could be used to look at the epidemiology of enterotoxigenic strains of B. fragilis in clinical infections and whether there is a correlation between disease and the presence of B. fragilis enterotoxin.

In age-matched controlled studies performed in Japan, enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis was isolated from 14.9% of 114 children aged 1 to 14 years with antibiotic-unassociated diarrhea (AUD) and 6.5% of 108 children aged 1 to 6 years with antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD). The difference in comparison with control children, was significant for AUD children but not AAD children.

Baby pigs orally inoculated with a porcine strain of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (K88+,Ent+) showed signs of depression, severe diarrhea, and, in some instances, death. Few, if any, signs of illness occurred if baby pigs were first inoculated with a K88 possessing non-enterotoxin-producing strain of E. coli.

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains expressing only coli surface antigen 6 (CS6) have previously been isolated from patients with diarrhea, but the immunogenicity of CS6 has not been established in humans. We have detected CS6-specific immunoglobulin A responses in the feces and blood of patients convalescing from natural ETEC disease and of volunteers given an oral ETEC vaccine.

We studied the effect of chlorpromazine on fluid accumulation caused by purified heat-stable enterotoxin (ST) from enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli in suckling mice. We found that chlorpromazine inactivated ST itself in vitro, but did not inhibit the activity of ST in the intestines.

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is one of the leading causes of diarrhea in developing countries. Bacteriophage therapy has the potential to aid in the prevention and treatment of ETEC-related illness. To that end, we present here the complete genome of ETEC siphophage Seurat and describe its major features.

At least 11 linked outbreaks of gastroenteritis with a total of 260 cases have occurred in Denmark in mid January 2010. Investigations showed that the outbreaks were caused by norovirus of several genotypes and by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli. Lettuce of the lollo bionda type grown in France was found to be the vehicle.

From 1996 to 2003, 16 outbreaks of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) infections in the United States and on cruise ships were confirmed. E. coli serotype O169:H41 was identified in 10 outbreaks and was the only serotype in 6. This serotype was identified in 1 of 21 confirmed ETEC outbreaks before 1996.
