Infections due to Pseudomonas fulva remain a rare but emerging concern. A case of ventriculitis due to Enterobacter cloacae and Pseudomonas fulva following placement of an external ventricular drain is described. Similar to other reports, the organism was initially misidentified as Pseudomonas putida. The infection was successfully treated with levofloxacin.
The DNA sequences of two IncHI2 plasmids, pEC-IMP and pEC-IMPQ, from metallo-beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacter cloacae clinical isolates were determined. The two conjugative plasmids are almost identical, but pEC-IMPQ carries an additional segment containing an orf513 (ISCR1), a truncated 3' conserved sequence, and a qnrB2. Comparative analyses provide support for the proposed ISCR1-mediate...
A strain of Enterobacter cloacae from a burn wound has displayed unstable resistance to silver nitrate and a linkage of this characteristic to that for rapid lactose fermentation and mucoidcolony structure. Attempts to demonstrate transferability of these unstable determinants gave negative results.
We investigated ertapenem-susceptible and -resistant extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacter cloacae isolates obtained from the same patient. Gene transcription of OmpD and OmpF was diminished in the ertapenem-resistant isolate. An efflux pump inhibitor decreased the MICs of ertapenem in the resistant strain, suggesting a potential role of efflux pumps in ertapenem resistance.
A transferable plasmid encoding SHV-12 extended-spectrum beta-lactamase, TEM-116, and aminoglycoside resistance was responsible for two sequential clonal outbreaks of Enterobacter cloacae and Acinetobacter baumannii bacteria. A similar plasmid was present among isolates of four different bacterial species. Recognition of plasmid transfer is crucial for control of outbreaks of multidrug-resistan...
High-level resistance to aminoglycosides produced by 16S rRNA methylases in Enterobacteriaceae isolates was investigated. The prevalences of armA in Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Enterobacter cloacae were 0.6%, 3.0%, and 10%, respectively. rmtB was more prevalent than armA. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns indicated that armA and rmtB have spread horizontally and clonally.
BMY-28142 was compared with other broad-spectrum antibiotics against gram-positive cocci and gram-negative bacilli. BMY-28142 was highly active against all gram-negative bacilli and especially against Enterobacter cloacae, Serratia marcescens, and Morganella morganii. Its in vitro activity suggests that BMY-28142 should prove to be useful for the treatment of gram-negative bacillary infections.
A 65-year-old man developed canaliculitis first of the left lower and later of the left upper lacrimal canaliculus. Mucoid material expressed from the upper canaliculus grew a pure culture of Enterobacter cloacae, the colonies of which had a stringy, tenacious, mucoid property consistent with the clinical findings. Treatment with topical chloramphenicol and oral ampicillin was followed by compl...
A VIM-5-producing Enterobacter cloacae isolate (EDV/1) was identified in a collection of clinical strains stored before 2002. The gene, bla(VIM-5), was located on a 2,712-bp BamHI-HindIII fragment of a 23-kbp (approximately) nonconjugative plasmid (pEDV5) in a class 1 integron as a single gene cassette.
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE To investigate the in vitro and in vivo activity of imipenem-colistin combination against multidrug-resistant Enterobacter cloacae infections in order to determine whether it should be explored further. METHODS The antimicrobial activity of colistin alone and in combination with imipenem was assessed versus an imipenem-susceptible isolate, E. cloacae GN1059, or an imipenem-...
